JOEL STYZENS: Relax Your Ears
In a time when so many new age albums are simply noodling synthesizers or ambient loops and flutes, it's refreshing to hear something in the genre that is actually engaging, played on real instruments (primarily guitar, cello and piano) and features instrumental pieces that can be intriguing and mysterious, when you really listen to them. Joel Styzens, a professional drummer who turned to guitar after being struck by tinnitus, has crafted a warm batch of songs that range in genre from folk to jazz to chamber to what some call easy listening. Highlights include the hand-drum driven "For You," and the time-shifting "7 8 6." As a whole, it's easiest to call it new age, but this is no spacey nonsense, this is an engrossing, darkly pleasing album.

JIM LAMPI & MICHAEL MANRING: North
The chance to hear a masterful musician is a wonderful thing; the chance to hear two of them play together is just heavenly. And that's just what this album is. Featuring world class Chapman Stick artist Jim Lampi, and world-renowned bass player Michael Manring, this instrumental album has touches of jazz, classical, and new age nuances, while remaining utterly listenable yet intriguing. The Chapman Stick is an unusual stringed instrument, sounding at times like a bass or guitar, at other times like a mandolin, and on the first track here, "True North", it sounds something like a harpsichord. Bringing to mind the nuanced performances of luminaries like Jaco Pastorius and Yo-Yo Ma, sounding at once composed and spontaneous. Though inspired by frozen wastelands, this album is anything but cold or discomforting.

YOKO: Treasury of Jewels
The thing about songs with non-English lyrics is that sometimes we can't understand what in tarnation the singer is so passionate about. Luckily for Yoko, the vocal melodies are intriguing enough that we don't really need to know exactly what the words mean. She calls it an album of Tibetan Buddhist mantras and praises, and that's good enough for me. Her voice is a bit like Madonna's, that is to say, she's fully capable of pure enchantment. Melodies and instruments from Tibet and India blend with modern synth pads and guitar to create a truly captivating blend of East-meets-West new age tunes with a hint of soft pop that George Harrison would have loved. It's an intriguing blend of sounds and cultures and Yoko's entrancing voice is a pure pleasure to listen to.

DANA CUNNINGHAM: The Color of Light
Featuring Grammy Award-winning artists including cellist, Eugene Friesen, percussionist, Glen Velez, and Will Ackerman, on guitar, The Color of Light is no predictable new age piano album. While one can expect to be transported to spacious and serene worlds of lush and tender reverberating piano, mapping out limitless terrestrial sound worlds, Dana’s delicate and deliberate playing sparks a uniquely colorful conversation between her musical voice and those joining her. With jazz harmonies creeping in from time to time and an evocative and imaginative classical minimalism that might be compared to George Winston, there is a sense of great prosperity and emotional generosity far beyond what is typical for the genre. Each of these fifteen tracks seem to pour from a wellspring of universal knowledge and natural abundance. Much like how the earth comes back to life in the spring and into its fullest expression in summer, The Color of Light evokes a sense of quickening, of something on the verge of becoming, of long-awaited catharsis and fruition.

SAGGIO: Hollow Bone: Healing Songs of the Native Flute
A former student of R. Carlos Nakai, a member of The International Native American Flute Association, and an honorary member of the Arizona Flute Circle, Saggio has been playing native American flutes for 13 years. It is clear through his playing that his spirit and mind are inseparable from the music- that the music moves through him as a vessel. Although there is no lack of gifted, inspired flute players today, Saggio posseses an inforgettable quality in his "voice." This deeply moving sense is particularly tangible in this release, largely because of his creative play with instrumental color and sound shaping. Accenting his playing with strings of an Indian tuned zither-harp, a baritone dulcimer, an udu, a meditation tongue drum, Jew's harps, a German Sansula and an extraordinary kalimba mounted on a drum head, the subtle explorations and metaphysical atmospheres are exquisite and powerful. This is easily one of the best flute releases we have heard in months.
