APA STATE MENTAL: The Reunited Heavy Metal States of Apa State Mental
20 tracks. The longest one doesn't even clock in at two and a half minutes. The first one is called "Eaten By Hippies." The guitars: fuzzy. The vocals: distorted. The songs: aggressive, often incendiary. These are all good things. Fittingly, these chaps from Sweden crank out some really good garage-ified rock. Still not sure if I fully understand the band's name, but that's not important. What is important is the way this group can switch on a whim – between the controlled melodic stomp of "A.P.A." and the frenzied charge of "Jacob's Inferno," a sub-60-second track that punches you in the gut and then runs away before you catch your breath. While the guitar tones and the vocal approaches remain fairly consistent during these 20 numbers, it's what the guys do within those confines that makes this disc so impressive. "Kids on Mars" uses a rolling bassline for its backbone, while "Hardly A Sane Man's Wallpaper" finds the guitar frantically warbling, running the show. This is a full-bore, straight shot of unfettered rock. Get into it.

DISARMONIA MUNDI: Fragments Of D-Generation
If you think the phrases "melodic" and "death metal" don't belong anywhere near each other, that's understandable. It's becoming increasingly rare that a group can pull off both without compromising their sound, so when we hear a band that does, it's fair to say they deserve some recognition. While death metal purists may balk a bit at the use of keyboards and the hints of melodies here, the presence is still felt throughout these ten tracks, and there should be no mystery as to where this band has its roots planted. Stomp-on-your-skull aggressive and painstakingly crafted, these songs are both brutal and meticulous, making the intrinsic rage that much more focused. Tracks like "Morgue of Centuries" and "Swallow the Flames" will quell your need for speed, while "Red Clouds" and "A Mirror Behind" seem relatively pensive in comparison. Don't worry, they still come out swingin'. This whole disc does, and it doesn't stop until the job is done.

WORWYK: Malignant
We were first introduced to prog-metal heavyweights Worwyk when their 'In Solitude' CD came through our doors a few years back. They were mind-blowing then, and, well, they might just have graduated to mind-annihilating. We're using "they" a bit loosely here, and it's technically inaccurate to use the term "band" to classify this project. It's really the work of one man (though he did recruit a new vocalist for this outing), Chicago's Tom Vitacco, a guy who loves to crank out the metal, but prefers to keep it in the studio. After you hear the 1-2 punch of "As You Die" and "Greed," you'll see why: the versatility and complexities harnessed in these two tracks alone are worth the price of admission. Comfortable with slow progressions as well as skull-rattling riffs, Vitacco is dexterous on the guitar and a perfectionist with the production. It all comes together on this disc, and we don't have any doubt that it'll be one of the best underground metal releases you'll hear all summer.

FIRST LADY ASSASSINS: First Lady Assassins
If you find Bad Religion a little too serious and NOFX not quite serious enough, these Oklahoma punks have carved out some middle ground for you. If their name wasn't enough of a patently-offensive/obviously-a-joke mix to begin with, the 11 songs here offer up a variety pack of sincerity ("History of Failure," "Grey is the New Black") and nutty fun ("Less Punk Than You," "Pills") that not only reflects on their versatility as a band, but also, thankfully, proves that while they're not afraid to take themselves seriously, they are wary of taking themselves TOO seriously. While the subject matter and feel of the tracks vary here quite a bit, so do the length and composition. With the shortest song being under a minute and a half, and the longest almost hitting six minutes, it's great to see a band playing this kind of music who doesn't seem preoccupied with any sort of formula. Wasn't that the point of punk in the first place?

PHONE, TETOLA93 & AO: 3way
When a group lists their influences as The Dillinger Escape Plan and Weezer, you've got to wonder what they think they're up to. Those bands couldn't be much farther apart on the musical spectrum, and combining the major elements of both groups sounds like a dicey prospect. Well, this Japanese three-piece pulls it off, while also adding their own individual touches to these six blistering tracks. "Mujyun Ga Egaku Sekai" kicks it off, picking up the pieces of hardcore and placing them back together with a math-rock sealant. "A.F.K." and "Uninstall" follow suit, raging through complex guitar leads with rhythmic accuracy and focused frustration. After the wonderfully titled (and incredibly intense) "World of Satan Village," the group wraps up the mini-album with a couple of melodic 90's rock-esque jams, proving that they're capable of more than just the blunt force approach. It's a nice chaser to end on, and makes for a great mix of music.
