BILL CARROTHERS & WENDY LEWIS: The Language of Crows
Both haunted and wide-eyed, this pair seems to have stumbled upon the Great American Songbook in an old spooky attic, its yellowed pages covered in dust and darkness. Bill Carrothers & Wendy Lewis have created an intimate, sepia-toned collection of hushed vocal/piano duets that are part creep-pop, part Gershwin, and part hyper-literate art song or torch ballad (similar to Elvis Costello’s work on the album ‘North’). In the end, though, “The Language of Crows” is not a fusion of styles so much as a mixture of passion and playfulness.

HAILEY NISWANGER: Confeddie
At age 19, this rising jazz star has already earned enough accolades to last a lifetime. I’ll let you read her bio if you want the full resume, but believe you me, it is truly impressive. And Hailey Niswanger’s alto sax skills are no less impressive. She is capable of both sophisticated restraint and explosive improvisations that cleverly twist melody in the very best kind of weird way. Her solid tone is assured and expressive. And Hailey has proven to be a very wise bandleader, as well, choosing great tunes and great players who are comfortable supporting one another without stepping on toes as so many young instrumentalists are prone to do.

THE HOT CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO: QHCSF
Inspired by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli and their Quintette du Hot Club de France that helped Parisian Gypsy jazz go global, these talented California musicians are keeping the tradition alive. All the requisite elements are featured: the relaxed phrasing, the blazing burners, the frenetic chord comping. But in addition to the usual French fare, The Hot Club of San Francisco adds a few American jazz standards (Round Midnight, Caravan) and even a Beatles tune (And I Love Her) to the mix to showcase their ability and versatility.

NICOLE HENRY: The Very Thought of You
Unfortunately, most singers approach the great American songbook like a museum piece. NOT Nicole Henry! She is wise, sophisticated, and soulful enough to know that these tunes (both the old classics and some newer compositions that take their queues from Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, etc.) are just empty houses. It is the job of the singer and musicians to fill them with life, breath, character, memories, and maybe even a little grit and grime for good measure. And these recordings are certainly not purist recreations, either. With a voice that could easily grace chart-topping R&B and pop songs, Nicole throws caution to the wind, knowing that authenticity comes from pairing a great performance with a great song. So many other so-called jazz vocalists, the staid sopranos and husky-toned cabaret singers, are just going through the motions.

HANNE HUKKELBERG: Rykestrasse 68
Whereas her debut album “Little Things” was a musical imagining of daily life in Oslo, Hanne Hukkelberg’s newest, brooding chamber-pop masterwork explores the spin and grit of Berlin. After living there for 6 months, Hanne set about the task of transforming her impressions of the city into sound. With a bewitching, “elfin” voice like Joanna Newsom and Bjork, a wickedly playful ear for twisting melodies and turns-of-phrase, and a restless ambition to capture something new, the artist has employed all her strengths here with impressive results. Part orchestral pop, part chamber jazz, part Weimar Republic cabaret channeled via Tom Waits, part casiotone lullaby, "Rykestrasse 68" will give you a glimpse into one artist’s undeniably charmed creative life.
