  • LUCK-ONE & DEKK: Beautiful Music

    LUCK-ONE & DEKK: Beautiful Music

Never count out the fresh Northwest. While raps throwin' it back a decade or two are always on tap in the hip hop world, finding a crew that can pay respect to the days of old without riding it to novelty status can prove difficult. This duo pulls it off, packing this seven-song EP with diversity in both the beats and the flows. Dekk tackles vintage sounds with an armament of synths, and his clean production style leaves the tracks blistering and crisp. Luck-One can rock a party ("80's Back"), but he's not shy when it comes to lowering the lights and getting serious for a sec ("Could've Been Me"). He seems to be right at home in both environments, and his confidence carries over to the rhythms and cadence of his smoothly stark approach to the mic. It's a shame there's only seven songs, but the price is right. Cop it.

  • LEIF(KOLT): Dead is the New Rich

LEIF(KOLT): Dead is the New Rich

Summing up the unhinged furor of the blippy hip hop madness that is this 13-track album is going to prove to be difficult. And really, I think that's the main reason it's so immediately infectious. There is so much ground covered here, both by the electro-synth thickness of the beats and the polysyllabic structures of the rhymes, that you probably won't truly hear every nook and cranny of this bad boy until you spin it a dozen times. With a knack for sarcasm and the will to tear down seemingly every facet of life that we as a society have built up, this is an MC who reminds us how the most ridiculous aspects of life are often the ones we don't bat an eye at. The kicker: it ain't preachy, it ain't narrow-minded, and it ain't simple. And the kid can flow. It all adds up to a jam-packed collection of songs that build off one another and demand and deserve to be bumped repeatedly.

  • ANIMAL NATION: Understanding More About Nothing Than Anybody Ever Thought Impossible or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Music

ANIMAL NATION: Understanding More About Nothing Than Anybody Ever Thought Impossible or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Music

These darn Canadian indie hip hoppin' rappers with their sweet-spot beats and their free-flowing rhymes. They're really startin' to make us U-S-of-A-er's look sloppy. Sending the sounds down south via Whistler, BC, this duo throws the true school fastball and mixes it up with a flurry of lyrically dense curves and off-the-wall knuckleballs. After setting the stage with the deeply grooved "Soul Station," they jump right in, taking "Party Animals" and sticking to the title waaay more literally than you would think possible. While that song is certainly one of the aforementioned knucklers, tracks like "Her Dangerous Smile" and "The Me in Me" play it a little closer to the vest, opening up about real-life issues but never wallowing in a pool of self-obsession. The beauty of this record lies not far beneath that approach: it's just a couple of dudes making some songs that they would want to listen to. This not only accounts for their attention to detail, but their overall excellence in execution. Well played.

  • POORLY DRAWN PEOPLE: Motion Not Emotion

POORLY DRAWN PEOPLE: Motion Not Emotion

It's tough to pin this Rhode Island hip hop crew down, and that's exactly what makes this disc such an interesting listen. Each track (though handled by the same producer, the crafty Dox) sparks a new vibe, shoots off in a new direction, but never strays too far from the cut that preceded it. Fittingly, there's a stream of randomness in both the music and the lyrics, but an underlying focus shoots through and makes it all gel. "Celebrity Rehab" is both fun and bitter, with quick-fire verbals calling out the pseudo-famous with a sly nonchalance, while "Better off Dead" takes a darkly funny look at post-breakup emotions. The beats knock across the board, with slick percussion providing tight backgrounds for Reason and Storm Davis, the two gruff MCs who know how to play off one another. There's a little bit of everything on this one, but there's nothing not to like. Get with it.

  • VARIOUS ARTISTS: Nerdcore Rising Soundtrack

    VARIOUS ARTISTS: Nerdcore Rising Soundtrack

If you're in the market for a Nerdcore hip hop starter kit, this disc is as good a place as any to start. And while it's certainly effective as an introduction to the niche genre, hardcore fans will also find plenty to enjoy here. MC Frontalot (usually credited as the originator of Nerdcore) is given plenty of play throughout these 15 tracks, and Frontalot completists will be overjoyed at the live and acoustic rehearsal tracks that make up a good portion of the collection. The live versions of "Braggadocio" and "Indier Than Thou" are solid representations of the freneticism inherent in his live shows, and also give a glimpse into the fervor with which some fans have embraced this relatively new style of music. The Nerdcore faithful are a lovingly insular bunch, and through this soundtrack, you'll get to see why they're so hooked on these geek-centric tracks. Yeah, the lyrics get a little esoteric, but the music's so damn fun anyone can get with it.
