JAMES TEALY: The Hardest Step to Land
With smart pop hooks, top notch mixing and production, and lyrics both introspective and worshipful, James Tealy's "The Hardest Step to Land" is a winner. From the vocal hook and layers of percussion on "Known" to the intimate piano pop of "Teach Me How to Pray" it becomes clear that Tealy is definitely a notch or two above his contemporaries. Later, on the rousing, anthemic epic "To the Nations" or the jazzy guitar-driven "Slipping Away" a fuller view of Tealy's skills becomes clear: he is broadly talented, yet stays focused in his songwriting - to great results. Sounding at times like Elvis Costello and at other times like Peter Furler of the Newsboys, Tealy's unique voice helps tie it all together. All in all, this is a wonderful, worshipful album.

DOUG BURR: The Shawl
This is truly moving music that falls somewhere between the moodier side of Wilco and the folkier side of Sufjan Stevens. With an incredibly evocative mix, sometimes recalling Daniel Lanois, every element of the arrangements here are purposefully placed and effected to the perfect amount. Not that the music steals the show - Burr's clear, strong vocals go from whisper soft to loud and upfront, not too dissimilar from David Gray, and he sings with such conviction, you can tell he believes what he's singing about. With lyrics taken directly from the Psalms, it's hard to argue with poetry that's thousands of years old, but what really takes this album away is the gorgeous production value and stirring melodies Burr gives us. For moody, folky music from a Biblical perspective, this is pretty much as good as it gets; let's hope that other acoustic Christian artists follow Burr's example of great production, original melodies, and timeless lyrics.

GLEN DAVID ANDREWS: Walking Through Heaven's Gate
Listening to this album is like taking a trip to a New Orleans church, and it's a fun and wonderful experience. You've got all the instruments you'd expect from a New Orleans jazz group and those you'll find in a church: organ, guitars, banjo, bass, drums, a 3 piece horn section, and a righteous choir. This album was recorded live in the church, and you can sense the crowd right there, plus the spontaneous interaction between the band, the soloists and the singers. Ranging from Dixieland jazz, to reverential hymns, to fiery and rocking gospel, the songs are excellently performed and recorded by a cracking team of real players who are imbued with a real sense of New Orleans' rich musical heritage. Not surprisingly, seven of the songs are interpretations of traditional hymns and spiritual melodies that many listeners are probably familiar with. Overall, this album is a refreshing look at how much fun church music can be.
