VARIOUS ARTISTS: Whale Music Remixed
What happens when you take an albums worth of whale recordings and give them to an eclectic group of DJs and remix artists? You get Whale Music Remixed. Obvious, I know, but what's not obvious is the fascinating sounds the remixers have come up with, all based around the songs of the whales. With sounds and styles ranging from ambient to experimental, from chillout to electronic soundscapes and nature sounds, this is truly a unique album. From the syncopated jazz drums of "cAChaLotic trialogue" by Luka Ligeti to the trip hop clarinet of "Beluga No Tears" by Gari Saarimaki and David Rothenberg, this CD is full of pleasant surprises.

ALL INDIA RADIO: A Low High
After listening to the first two tracks here, you'll have a good idea of what you're getting into, and you'll love it: sublime slide guitar work, dreamy beats and ambient synths, moody muted trumpets, and tremolo guitars that sound like an Ennio Morricone dream. It's altogether lovely, lush, and thrilling. Later in the album, strings, piano, and acoustic guitars are deftly woven in and out of the mix. While not easily classified, this dreamy instrumental electronic/post-rock is reminiscent at times of Daniel Lanois, at other times Air, and at other times Portishead or even UNKLE.It's a really engaging blend of sounds that truly sound like nothing else. WIth some big name special guests and immaculate mixing and production work, "A Low High" is a pure pleasure.

BROTHERSISTER: The Wunder Tales
With melodic, dramatic and sometimes jawdropping songs that mix of electronic music with guitars, BrotherSister (yes, they really are siblings) have made a tremendous album that keeps you wondering what sounds you'll hear next. Sharing lead vocals, the songs vary from sounding sometimes like Imogen Heap to sometimes like Thom Yorke. And although the songs are primarily electronically driven, there are plenty of organic sounds as well, such as the piano and vocals of "Autumn Leaves", the strings and drum set on "Given Truths," one of the standout tracks. Another standout is the piano-driven "Drop" which sounds a bit like Bjork, in a good non-derivative way. This is really clever, exciting electro-pop and deserves to be heard.

SISMO: Pueblo
Building over a slow guitar motif, skittering electronics and a few choice vocals samples, the opening track on Sismo's "Pueblo" lays the groundwork for the rest of the album. Recalling at times everything from Boards of Canada, Sigur Ros, Bjork, and even latter-era b-sides from Radiohead, this is engaging, experimental and somewhat ambient chillout music. With most of the vocals on thealbum coming from non-English samples, English speakers are forced to listen to simply the melodic and rhythmic quality of the singing, and it becomes quite hypnotic and mesmerizing. While a handful of songs feature traditional vocals, the most interesting stuff comes from the weirder ideas, like the IDM track "Mientras Duerme" or the long, looping, start-stopping "Sueño Androgino." This is electronic music that should appeal to fans of 21st century sounds.

AMANDA RAY: Mirrored Images
When you find an artist who has the bravado to claim "The Mind of Radiohead, the Guts of Bjork and the Heart of Sade," you'd expect either big things, or a big letdown. Thankfully, Amanda Ray delivers big and lovely things - with immaculate, pristine production and lush, warm layers of vocals. Mirrored Images is a pleasurable album of sparkling melancholy with a trip-hop vibe. Some standout tracks: "Must be Love," with its mellow trip hop beat and sensuous vocals, and "Chicken," which is built around a spiraling guitar loop and a slightly drum n bass beat, fuzz bass adds a propulsive edge, while the layers of mellow, mesmerizing looped vocals transport the listener to unexpected but thrilling places. Another standout is the album closer "Wounded," which mixes an exotica bubbling bass line, effected drum loop, timpanis, what sounds like a guzheng (Chinese zither), and ambient guitar, and adds Ray's radiant layered vocals into the mix. It's a fascinating sound that, like much of the album, is easy to lose yourself in and will be enjoyable for many future listens.
