NAIM AMOR: Soundtracks vol III
Naim Amor isn't a group, he's a single, multi-talented man who plays nearly a dozen instruments on this exceptional album that fuses bossa nova, surf, folky americana, and even electro-funk elements. All together the album, though instrumental, is fascinating and engages the listener at every turn. Through varying instruments, genres, and feels on every track, you never know what you're going to hear next, but it's always good. For example, the only thing that could make the chilled out surf sounds during the first half of "Precious Second" any cooler is the fuzzed out spacey guitars during the second half of the song. Or the loungey, marimba and wordless vocal-driven jazz of "Les Sortilèges" somehow manages to evoke both the "Taxi Driver" soundtrack and The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds". The next track, "Tucson Nocturne," is a taste of western swing meets dusty americana guitars duking it out with crazy jazz sax. It's a great collection of sounds and songs that feels a bit like a world tour you'll want to take over and over again.

MICHAEL FIX: ClassicFix
With "ClassicFix," Michael Fix takes a new approach to some beloved classical pieces, like "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and "William Tell Overture." On many of these songs, Fix is performing just a solo steel string guitar, and his talent is undeniable. By adding flourishes like percussion, bass, strings, or even a modern bluegrass inflection, as he does in "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," the songs often go in new, unexpected directions. You'll recognize the timeless melodies, but be impressed by his virtuosity both in his performance and non-traditional interpretation of these tunes. Or check out his intertwining of Tarrega's flamenco classic "Lagrima" with the Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black." It's a new take on a mash-up, and it totally works. These are fun and captivating performances that will appeal both to lovers of the classics, and to those who can appreciate taking classical music a little beyond its comfort zone.

FRANK & FRIENDS II: Forgetaboutit
Ring-a-ding-ding, you crazy cats! What could be cooler than an album that's got the essence of swingin' good times that made the Rat Pack so hip? Only not from a voice from beyond the grave, but from this smooth voiced jazzy vocalist? Nothing, that's what. Crisp production of a live big band helps make this album really move. And not content to just be a tribute act, it's filled with brand new original numbers that stay true to the style of yesteryear's classic songwriters like Jerome Kern, Rodgers & Hart, Hoagy Carmichael, and Cole Porter. And while the sound and style isn't groundbreaking, the songs and the moods they evoke are so much fun and so infectious, they basically make everyone in the room 25% cooler after hearing them.

PHIL KEAGGY & FRIENDS: Acoustic Cafe
Basically, this is an album of amazing songs, from one of America's foremost guitarists and singer/songwriters, who already has a stunning 50 solo albums to his credit. On this delightful new album, Keaggy takes on classic songs from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and more. The thing is, he's right at home with this material, and we get the feeling these are really songs that he loves. With a voice quite similar to Paul McCartney, Keaggy is truly in his element with these songs. Old fans will love the instrumental tip of the hat to "What a Day" (his first album) at the end of "If Not for You", and will know guest vocalist Randy Stonehill from his work on Keaggy's "Sunday's Child" album from 1989. Other CD highlights include Nina Landis' breathy, passionate vocals on "Songbird", and the lush vibrato guitars on "All I Have to Do is Dream," Keaggy's duet with Jeremy Casella, who holds his own while harmonizing like a champ. Keaggy even includes an original composition, the lovely "You Have My Heart", which rests comfortably with the already familiar favorites. Having grown up listening to Phil Keaggy and the artists he covers here, its particularly pleasing to hear his graceful interpretations of these standards.

CLASSICS: 1 in 4
We've all heard female singer songwriters, and they tend to sound the same: nothing special, nothing terrible. Thankfully, Classics new EP isn't just another singer songwriter. Don't be fooled by the initial sound of acoustic guitar and voice; there's a whole lot more going on here. Each of the 3 songs is like a journey; they start at one point and as they go along, we're greeted by different sounds and attractions: here's a male harmony, there's an intricate, danceable drum machine beat, here's a gliding bass line, there's an occasional nuanced keyboard part. Despite the great eclectism of sounds and textures in their songs, it's Elsa Gernandt's strong, sometimes breathy voice (think Imogen Heap) that really sells them. As a whole, it becomes clear that these aren't just songs, they're compositions with a lot of thought and care going into each one. And it's a real pleasure to listen to.
