  • JORDAN TICE: Long Story

    JORDAN TICE: Long Story

With influences ranging from Swedish fiddle music to rap, Be-bop to Bartok, Beethoven to Bulgarian, 21 year old Jordan Tice has boundless energy and creativity. After studying both jazz and classical guitar in college, Tice is currently enjoying a full scholarship for music composition at Maryland's Towson University. All of this knowledge of music doesn't turn his folky bluegrass instrumentals into experiments in theory or testing the audience's limits; on the contrary, it seems that he knows just which notes to place where, and how to use a fairly standard group of instruments in ways that continually sound unique, pleasing, and engaging to listeners. While in the general "bluegrass" milieu, Tice clearly has a much broader palette from which to paint. From Celtic fiddling on "Sofia" to the jazzy acoustic guitar with cello (or is that a bowed upright bass?) accompaniment on "Ode to a Vending Machine," these songs are surprising, lovely, and show strong promise for Tice's future as an adventurous musician.

  • ALEX WOODARD: Alex Woodard

    ALEX WOODARD: Alex Woodard

With styles ranging from country pop and rock to bluegrassy ballads and with a handful of albums under his belt, San Diego's Alex Woodard has grown quite adept at his own style of finely crafted Americana. Backed by a top-notch band, Woodard sings of highways (Halfway, Photograph), growing up (Older, Billie Holiday), a lover lost to cancer (The Table), other reflections on life and it's possibilities. An added treat of the album are the guest appearances by Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins on both vocals and violin, former Posies and Sunny Day Real Estate bassist Joe Skyward, plus former Posies and Fountains of Wayne drummer Brian Young is one of Woodard's core band members. With a voice reminiscent of Tom Petty, Woodard has a knack for writing songs that are introspective, heartfelt, and good stories to boot.

  • GREY DELISLE: Homewrecker

    GREY DELISLE: Homewrecker

You might know her from one of the 16 cartoons she currently does voice work for, or you might know her husband and collaborator, Murray Hammond of the Old 97's, so it should come as no surprise that Grey De Lisle is able to use that voice to create some really engaging songs, in this case, with outstanding classic country singing. Check out tracks like "Beautiful Mistake" and you'll be transported to the timeless sound of 1960s country chanteuses like Loretta Lynn and Dusty Springfield. Meanwhile, tracks like "Dead Cat" call to mind the groovy, rocking Americana of Lucinda Williams or early Sheryl Crow. It's good stuff, from a talented woman with a great voice.

  • JESSE WINCHESTER: Love Filling Station

    JESSE WINCHESTER: Love Filling Station

A brief history of Jesse Winchester: rather than fight in Vietnam, he moved to Canada and befriended some amazing musicians. His 1970 debut album was produced by Robbie Robertson, engineered by Todd Rundgren, and featured Levon Helm. His songs have been covered by Tim Hardin, Jimmy Buffett, Tom Rush, The Everly Brothers, Reba McEntire, and Elvis Costello. If that doesn't pique your interest, just listen to a few songs on "Love Filling Station." With styles ranging from the old-timey country of "It's a Shame About Him," to the soft a/c pop of "I Turn to My Guitar," to the bluegrass-infused "Far Side Bank of Jordan," to the 50's style "Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding," Winchester is clearly a masterful songwriter with no inhibitions about exploring whatever genre fits the lyrics of a given song. The real highlight of the album, however, is his voice - a soft southern tenor with wonderful nuance and life that can only come with age. Like a fine wine, Winchester's voice has acquired a new life through the years, becoming more soulful and supple. With special guests Jerry Douglas and Claire Lynch, "Love Filling Station" is a wonderfully engaging album from beginning to end.
