  • KANTORSKI POPE DUO: Brahms 21 Hungarian Dances

KANTORSKI POPE DUO: Brahms 21 Hungarian Dances

When Brahms and Clara Schumann first performed “21 Hungarian Dances” as a duet in 1868, the experience was described as “Improvisatory. Exotic. Fiery. Reckless.” The exquisitely talented Kantorski Pope Duo has made this recording as an attempt to recreate “the ephemeral spirit of a unique moment in the history of romantic music.” They have succeeded. The playing veers from whimsical passages of spritely bounce to atmospheric melancholy without ever drawing too much attention to itself, keeping the power of the composition at the fore. It is a true pleasure to hear these accomplished soloists combine their talents, and it is not surprising that this piano duo is winning awards left and right.

  • MYCHAEL DANNA: Adoration

    MYCHAEL DANNA: Adoration

This film music composer boasts one hell of a resume, working with some of the finest directors in the industry. For Atom Egoyan’s “Adoration” he has scored a tense soundtrack where beautifully lush string sections evoke a sense of subtle foreboding to accompany the on-screen drama. Suspenseful, percussive, melodic; these pieces can easily stand on their own.

  • DANNY HELSETH: Snapshots

    DANNY HELSETH: Snapshots

This album of angular art songs, performed with spritely lyricism on euphonium with piano and string quartet accompaniment, has such bounce, such swagger, that it is just the sort of listen that will get you going in the morning. Danny Helseth is an impressively agile instrumentalist who can put soul and playfulness into each melodic phrase because the mechanics are all second nature. He, no doubt, developed and honed his abilities during his tenure as euphoniumist in the U.S. Air Force Band. He is able to strike that perfect balance between lightness and intensity. Supported on this recording by percussive piano and staccato string quartet, Danny has selected the perfect setting, stark and forceful, in which his talents and agility can really shine.

  • HINRICH ALPERS: Honens Laureate Series: Schumann

HINRICH ALPERS: Honens Laureate Series: Schumann

This classical pianist seems to be winning awards, high praise, honorable mentions, and endorsements everywhere he goes. But listening to his latest album of Schumann piano pieces, it becomes clear that the hype and concert hall hoopla is backed up by a lifetime of study, dedication, and, most importantly, some serious passion. Effortlessly dexterous and expressive, Alpers attacks these works with equal parts confidence and reverence. Thankfully, the recording quality is similarly brilliant, capturing all the round warmth and resonance of his piano without sacrificing anything in crispness or clarity. It is tough to go wrong with a great recording of a great player performing a great piece by a great composer!
