"A TRIUPHANT ACCOMPLISHMENT- Intelligent lyrical content buoyed with "HOT DAMN- THEY'RE GOOD" musicianship."

"Introspective and emotional..."
THE BUFFALO NEWS
Best described as an acoustic chameleon, Mike Maffei's style in songwriting and performance have always varied greatly.
As evidenced in his first CD from Falling Star Music, CONSEQUENCES OF DESIRE, he is as comfortable playing solo acoustic songs as he is performing with either Kim Kerns, his singing partner of many years, or his backup band, The Cash Cows.
The CD is an eclectic mix of thirteen original songs, ranging from the haunting
COWBOY FROM COEUR D'ALENE, to the rocked out ONE STEP AHEAD OF A BREAKDOWN, to the poignant ballad, PROMISED LAND.
"My influences over the years have been many, and I strive not to get stuck into that OH GOD, NOT ANOTHER SINGER/SONGWRITER WITH AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR pigeonhole. I do my best to write intelligently about the feelings and experiences of our lives, but pray every day that I NEVER TAKE MYSELF TOO SERIOUSLY!
Otherwise, I find that writing becomes either way too preachy, or just too boring."
An AIDS Survivor of twelve years, Mike's music retains a constant , underlying element of survival. As Robyn Conniff of ARTVOICE notes, "With grit and grace, Maffei's musical vignettes hit home with anyone for whom love's been a hard road, but who ain't pulling off to the side just yet." Asked how much his illness has to do with his writing, Mike answers, "I am a writer first, and a person living with AIDS second. I don't think much of what I write is directly connected to my AIDS diagnosis. I've never been a "cause" writer. I think people resent being hit over the head with what I like to refer as the "writer's frying pan of righteousness. Besides," Mike quips, "Like any good singer/songwriter, I have found plenty of other depressing subjects to write about." Not that this is a heavy CD.
A regular performer on the "Rust Belt" folk circuit, Mike has also played the Turtle Hill Folk Festival, The Williamson Folk Fest, Ted's Wrecking Yard in Toronto, Canada, and appeared as an opener for Shakespeare in the Park. He resides in his native Buffalo, New York, and looks forward to beginning his next recording project of more original songs, A STRANGER IN NEW YORK.
"A STRANGER IN NEW YORK promises to be much more of a challenge- My writing is becoming more eclectic as time goes on. It might be a little harder to get everything to gel as beautifully as it did on the first project. CONSEQUENCES OF DESIRE was never conceptualized as a thematic album, but as time went on, it became obvious to me that my choice of songs, their order, everything, even the arrangements were becoming something special."
