Singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, arranger, producer, video artist--Michael Loonan does it all. The musical community has taken serious notice of Loonan's versatility.
His studio work has been compared to Brian Wilson and his musical style brings forth reminders of the Beatles, Squeeze, Graham Nash, Paul Simon and James Taylor.

Michael Loonan is in heavy demand as a performer and producer. He performs at a variety of venues on piano and guitar, as well as with a dance band, 2nd Generation. His easygoing, humorous stage manner, strong original material and solid treatment of standards from the 60's to today attract a loyal following. Michael is well-known for his creation of "the Loony Bin Band" and parody songs for KSTP-AM's 'The Mischke Broadcast,' as well as other special music for The Don Vogel Show. He produced, arranged, sang backup vocals and played several instruments on "The Day Has Come", a spiritual recording with his brother, Patrick Loonan. Michael is a TV/Radio jingle writer, and has composed music for many clients, including 3M, Quaker Oats, the Detroit Tigers, First Choice Health of Charleston, the St. Paul Saints, 3M, and many more. Michael even dons a tuxedo and plays piano professionally for restaurants, meetings, events, etc.

  • Heard "Don't tip the Milkman" in a movie!

    I've loved this CD for years, and recently saw a private screening of "Arnold's Park," a movie that'll be officially released in 2007. The "Milkman" song was playing in the background of an amusement park scene and I almost spit out my popcorn! Very cool. Looking forward to the soundtrack.

I teach a creative writing class in Junior High school, and I love your lyrical imagery. I encourage my students to write with unique metaphors and imagery, allowing the read some room to interpret, etc. Love the music, Michael!

    I heard 'Onward we wander' sung at a funeral. Powerful opening line, "When the old man puts his hand upon the shoulder, and life moves onward, outward." Not a dry eye in the church. Really a hypnotic and moving song with an uplifting message...

  • Pleasing and rather catchy

    This is great songwriting, although the lyrics seem a bit 'out there' at times (Lycorice Lydia). But I admire the scope and talent that Michael possesses as a writer. Not many songwriters can go from acoustic folk ('I pray for you') to pseudo hard-rock ('All i can say'). He pulls it off like a magician. When's the next one comin' out?

    My wife and I heard one of the tracks from this CD on our local news station KARE-11 (they played "All I can Say"). We downloaded the track at audiolunchbox.com and it rocks! Planning to buy the whole CD. Our kids dig the song so much, they insist on playing it while they clean their rooms!

    Share the Disguise keeps climbing back into my CD player so I can hum along, tap a foot, or gain more insight into one of Michael's gems. My Aunt Annie is Beatle-like, catchy, and introspective while All I Can Say just plainly moves and you find yourself carried along by some of the best guitar work around. The work (love?) of this writer/performer shows a solid understanding of musical and lyrical structure that few writers exhibit. Each time I listen to Share the Disguise, I hear new harmonies, find new surprises, and discover more to enjoy in this CD.

    If you haven't heard of Michael Loonan, that's understandable, but unfortunate. This multi-instrumentalist Beatles freak has uncorked a classic pop record with abundant lyrical and musical sophistication. Loonan isn't chasing the recent power-pop Rasberries renaissance, nor the au courant noise-pop trend. HIS style is a modern application of songwriting techniques when the Phil Spector school co-existed with the folk-rock boom (ie, Rubber Soul). For instance, 'My Aunt Annie' recalls 'Good Vibrations,' 'When I'm 64' and CSNY's 'Our House,' from section to section. And that's just one example of Loonan's amazing grace with musical arrangement. Like a young Brian Wilson, he takes care to let subtle acoustic instruments make a tremendous emotional impact. Not only is Loonan a tasty musical arranger, but when he puts his mind to it, he's an engaging, old-fashioned lyricist, with an ability to evoke a strong sense of place and time in his quaint stories. It's a welcome change from so many modern rockers who merely try to trap you in the cobwebs of their own cloudy mind. And Loonan's comforting voice (think Graham Nash again) lets his words fall effortlessly in very moving clusters. In all, Share the Disguise is a refreshing return to fundamentals by an artist with too much taste to ignore.

    Loonan is an unabashed Beatles freak, but his complex, gentle pop arrangements sound more like the work of Simon and Garfunkel or Beach Boy Brian Wilson. In concert, Loonan is a strong guitarist with a knack for a good hook, and he's a relaxed singer whose voice recalls Graham Nash's. But the recording studio is where Loonan really soars. He shows a highly advanced skill for blending instruments and voices. The best of Loonan's lyrics show a keen ability to project himself into a fictional scenario, while retaining a strong sense of detail to make the songs ring true. If his lyrics stay as consistently sharp as his melodic arrangements, Loonan might deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the Fab Four.

    Michael Loonan isn't always happy, but it sure sounds that way, and Share the Disguise possesses a balance that is rare in pop music nowadays. The descending subject matter in the lyrics is matched, even surpassed, by the ascending, almost Beatle-esque quality of the music. Each song unravels like an intelligent nursery rhyme, wrapping you up in a warm wool blanket of heartfelt songwriting. In 'The Arthur Way of Life,' we wander through the neighborhood Loonan's childhood, where even the local dope fiend, 'Old Man Henry,' comes across as a benevolent, colorful weave in the fabric of his memory. Loonan credits a few extraneous musicians who helped put this CD together, but make no mistake, the music and the vision are his and his alone. This is an album for all states of mind. Listen to it when you're happy, listen to it when you're sad, but do yourself a favor and listen to it soon.

    When I was in college, a friend introduced me to Michael's music. I know and love every song on this CD, but "Inside our Smile" is my favorite. My nieces all go nuts over "Lycorice Lydia!"
