    This is the best of the new music I have picked up this year. In particular, the tracks "Guilt and Shame" and "Be Real" are exceptional, passionate vocal performances. This will be something that I return to for years to come. The cd has stirred me deep inside, and is a discovery I now share with others.

    As an older guy who doesn't listen to much radio, i pick up a lot of new music from TV shows that feature new artists' music as background. I first heard Zuckerman on the CW program, "Supernatural". I had to hear more.

    The second thing that strikes you about singer-songwriter Josh Zuckerman's new CD "Out from Under" (once you get past the eye-popping photos on the CD insert) is that this young New Jersey-based artist has really found himself, musically speaking, on his sophomore album. "Out from Under" is full of rhythmic hooks and bold experimentation. This doesn't mean that JZ has come any closer to fitting his self-styled sound into one particular genre. Far from it. The upbeat "How Long Am I Suppose To Be Alone", for example, has a simple earthiness and instant "Let the good times roll" appeal (Yes, even with that title!) that puts it in the realm of country rock. Yet, "Soul Driver", later on in the album, is influenced by house music (a probing, pounding, funky beat) and electro-pop (Think Depeche Mode and New Order). However, for that track, Zuckerman's delivery elevates the song a coupla notches by avoiding the "distant" vocal style that often characterize club music and electronica. So, if this reviewer has to classify "Out from Under", I would label it as "guitar-driven, bona fide American rock 'n' roll with country and electro-pop flavors". I say "American", because Zuckerman's music really captures the joy, the instant made-for-radio appeal, and the infectious positive energy that transforms some certain lucky songs into enduring pop classics from New York City to the City of Angels. Other interesting musical touches abound on the album: There's a jazzy sax solo in "Roses", courtesy of Michael Ghegan; and on "Peace of Me", Zuckerman shows his listeners that he's got hazel-eyed soul to spare. Eclectic influences aside, the unifying force of every one of the 13 songs on "Out from Under" is Zuckerman's skill at expertly choosing just the right musical adornments to complement his voice, lyrics, and guitar playing. On Track #2, "Authenticity", for example, Zuckerman combines some truly infectious beats with lyrics about soul-searching and truth: "I will tell you no lies, Don't read between the lines; Because, there ain't no lines to read; Cause what it is you see, is what it is you get; Anything less, would ag-gra-vate my soul..." as JZ concludes, "It's all a part of my authenticity!" Like the album's predecessor, "A Totally New Sensation", there's also a very spiritual aspect in "Out from Under"'s lyrics and themes, which the astute listener soon learns is echoing Josh Zuckerman's own road to self-discovery, both in and out of the recording studio. Josh Zuckerman sings most of his lyrics with an intentional, mid-pitch growl-- which will likely remind many listeners of Zuckerman's fellow New Jersey boy Jon Bon Jovi. For "Guilt and Shame", Zuckerman temporarily surrenders the distinctive voice his fans know, and we get to hear his voix au naturale-- at least in the beginning-- as he offers up some of his most personal lyrics: "And there were times when I still get mad, Cause I grew up without a dad; But, I still find myself singing and searching for the reasons... I was like a month without a season." After that, we get to hear JZ's (for lack of a better word) "real" voice for an emblematic track called, appropriately enough, "Be Real"-- which is something of Josh Zuckerman's mantra. (To prove the point, he even has "Be Real" tattooed on his lower back.) It's the heartfelt lyrics that make this song stand out, and at times Zuckerman slows the melody down to the point where his delivery is one step up from spoken word. "How Long Am I Suppose to Be Alone" is one of the album's highlights: an instantly catchy, lighthearted ode to "that old feeling" that all us single folks know so well. It's also an audience favorite, as evidenced by the reaction that JZ gets when the song is performed live. The audience joins in with the song's chorus: "I'm alone in bed, How my life is sad; Well how am I supposed to live without you? Feels like I've been had, now this boy's gone bad; How long am I supposed to be alone?!" Zuckerman even throws in some light rapping. The violins on "Taking Care of Me", the album's closer, make for a truly triumphant finale. Some critics may say that Zuckerman's endless cache of musical tricks (especially on songs like "Something Inside") may be a bit too self-indulgent. But when the results sound this good, and Josh Zuckerman succeeds in replicating those good results on stage (and then some!), who cares? He may still be growing as an artist, but musically, Josh Zuckerman seems to have always known the place that he can call home. Jed Ryan
