notes

Shunyata Records™ is proud to announce the release of the CD, "Zen Blues Quartet™", by the group of the same name.

Comprised of some of the best studio musicians in LA, it features: Steve Ferrone - drums (Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Average White Band...), Jeff Young - keyboards, (Sting, Jackson Browne, Donald Fagen...), Tim Scott - bass and lead vocals (Jack Mack, Tower of Power, Robben Ford...) and John March - guitars. With special guests Rev. Dave Boruff - tenor sax, Tom Saviano - tenor sax, Steve Madaio - trumpet, and Milen Kirov - keyboards. Recorded "Live" at Westlake Audio this past December, and Mastered at Capitol Records.

This CD is a fantastic snapshot, of a moment where musicians played together with passion, and a total disregard for what might happen later. We just played because we love playing music! We know--a crazy concept!!! But...

Live music with real musicians, really playing. No slick effects, no pitch correcting the vocals in Protools, just music!

For more information about this project, please visit our site on the web at www.zenbluesmusic.com

If you like the CD, then please forward this email to all your friends, and help us subvert the corporate agenda
by keeping real music alive and kicking!

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Best wishes

John March and all the members of ZBQ

  • Quality and Style
    author: Bluesbunny Editor

This CD is a mix of songs from the great and much missed masters such as Albert's King and Collins that I felt I'd known for years thanks to the ease which Zen Blues' arrangements flow. The rock solid base of Steve Ferrone on drums and Tim Scott on bass provides a foundation for this house of blues. Added to this is Jeff Young's glorious Hammond organ; never over-played and never lost in the mix. Jazzy lines and some, thankfully sparingly used, 21st century histrionics lift John March's guitar solos out of the usual blues box. Let's not over look Tim Scott's bourbon-soaked/soul-filled vocals either… The one low point, I thought, is "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You?" Don't get me wrong, there's no loss of quality in the production or musicianship, but I personally - and it is only my opinion - found the track too smaltzy and wee bit out of place. The clean lines and polished production may not suit the kind of blues fan who prefer their music down and dirty, all sweat and plaid shirts, but there's no denying that quality and style are something the Zen Blues Quartet have in spades.

  • For the love of music
    author: Laurent

This CD is slightly different than your usual blues CD because the material presented is more varied. Driven by Steve Ferrone's superb and groovy drumming, ZBQ put its stamps on some very interesting covers and does it with passion and emotion. The voice, even though it is an acquired taste, fits the music. Great guitar playing. Nothing very new but definitively worth adding to any blues fan collection. A must have for Ferrone's fans though.

  • This album gets into your soul!
    author: Lisa Griffin

Love it! Love it! Love it! This album grabs you from the moment the first note is blown to the last! I can't help feeling as though I'm in the best damn blues club deep in the South or maybe the East. When can expect the next one!

  • All I can say is Wow!!!
    author: Richard Gilbert

I love modern blues! Too many bands all just sound the same these days. This band definitely does not sound like anything else out there! A really fresh look at some great tunes. Beautiful singing! Amazing guitar work, and just really funky! I stumbled on this band by accident, but will be looking for all their future releases and gigs. Thanks for a great record. I am really glad someone is keeping the blues alive!!

  • All I wanted was more...
    author: Katherine Sue Kelso

A creative project unique in its delivery and artfulness. Every note enhances the next. These musicians take The Blues and make it sing, cry, and dance. The guitar cries, the drums are hard hitting, the keyboards tickle, and the bass line thumps. All I wanted when it was over, was more... Keep it coming fellas...

  • Folks that actually care how things sound?
author: Myles S. Rose - Guitar Amplifier Blueprinting

Good solid material recorded very well, mastered well and obviously played by folks that have quite a bit of talent and skill. Not the same old tones! Great sounding amps and guitars that make it clear that somebody cares how things sound. All the musicians on the CD are first rate. There is a nice variety in the selection material. Many blues folks just seem to repeat the same basic song over and over. This CD was refreshing in the aspect of a wider scope of material than is generally common in blues CDs. A CD worthy of any blues collection.
