notes
Zayra’s beautiful and mesmerizing voice is accompanied by the musical compositions of two talented and gifted blues and jazz musicians: Allen Ross and Mike Thomas. The string instruments were created by Mike Thomas of Zamar Instruments.
The track ”Free Us From the Claws of Cruelty” was written for and dedicated to the people of Zimbabwe, who have endured the extreme hardships of genocide and starvation. A portion of the proceeds from this CD go to the Seeds of Light organization (www.seedsoflight.org) to benefit the children living in South Africa.
Zayra's poetry has appeared in various magazines and journals, such as Zimbabwe Situation, The Panhandler Quarterly, Eyes of the Poet, IITM, Astropoetica and Alehouse Press. She has been interviewed and performed her work on two radio shows: SW Radio Africa (appearing on this CD) and West Marin Community Radio for The House of the Poet.

An Exquisite Soul-Filled Experience
author: Brian Douthit, Eyes Of The Poet Radio“I am the red throne of Kali, the orange flames of Sekhmet. The dancing diva of Durga come to call your spirit back into your body.” -Zayra Yves from the track, “I am SHE” Crowned Compassion is more than a mere reading of poems mixed with music. This CD is utterly rich with soulful melodies combined with the sultry and soothing voice of Zayra Yves. Zayra Yves has a way of sweeping up the listener and carrying them to lush scenes of love and beauty. These are settings where words create an artistic tapestry that transports the listener to places as far away as Africa, and as close as their own essence. From the very beginning, “Faded Hieroglyphs” awakens the senses with visions of lions sitting as sun statues, roaring in the night winds. Yves implants eternal images in the heart as she echoes the embracing words of the women of Zimbabwe as they say, “Welcome home my sister, my brother.” The stirring beauty of the title track, “Crowned Compassion“, connects with a universal meaning. This could almost be a prayer or mantra as Yves embodies humanity seeking “the roots of virtue and noble intention.” This is a very inspiring piece that encourages the listener to evolve, unfold, and blossom as the lotus. In addition to the soul-inspiring beauty, Zayra Yves conveys womanhood with a great sense of strength and confidence while still remaining sensuous. Tracks such as “Let Us Speak The Language Of Love” and “Saudade” fuse both feminine desire and spiritual depth. Crowned Compassion will appeal to anyone who enjoys great poetry. It is a well produced CD with unmatched quality. Zayra Yves is a gifted poet who can draw the listener in with her poems and the music created for this CD adds to the experience. Those on a spiritual path will easily find value in the words of Zayra Yves. She expresses both the human and divine nature of us all with enormous depth and understanding. All of this coupled with visions of Africa and feminine strength, make this CD an exquisite soul-filled experience.

A place where there was nothing but serenity and it also gave me a chance to reflect on everything Zayra had to say. Dynamic Poems that Move & Breathe their Way into Your Being
author: Liz CaseyCrowned Compassion is a unique and dynamic expression of generous, deep-spirit poems (some set to captivating music), which move and breathe their way right into your being. Zayra's poetry, like all great poetry, passes sensuously between the microcosm of the inner self (the body, feelings, and soul) to the macrocosm of the wider human experience (the community, mankind's collective actions, and the health of the planet). She tells us through her visual-rich work that the inner, what happens in our minds and bodies, is a reciprocal metaphor for what happens in the outer world. In short, what we do to our bodies and each other, we do to all of mankind. Likewise, what we do to the earth, we do to the self. Nothing is truly separate; all living things are connected and dependant. It's Zayra's ability to move between the inner and outer realms and explore both the resonances and differences that gives Crowned Compassion such power, such gorgeous heft. Zayra has an amazingly smooth, captivating, and melodic voice that invites us into the work and gently asks us to be present, check in with our feelings and bodies, move deeper into our breathing, and remember that we need each other. I find so much gratitude and love in her work that it makes me breathless. I listen to this CD at least three times a week to remind myself of what's truly important—-the full-feeling human heart, a balanced intellect, the connection between things, breath, movement, feeling, and responsibility. This work is a celebration of the wonderful sameness of all that is and the fierce, vital individuality that makes each of us special. What a treasure this collection is. What a gift this poet is to the world. --Liz Casey, Writer
Subtle Enlightenment
author: Saurabh MadaanTwo compilations from this Cd - "Crowned Compassion" and "I Believe in your Broken Wings" - remind me of Gibran, and take me to a world of peace. Not only are the words powerful, Zayra's voice is spiritually soothing and the music is beautiful in a complimentary way. Her much-acclaimed poem for the people of Zimbabwe, "Free Us From the Claws of Cruelty" - which appears as a track in the CD - is a touching and inspiring piece of work. When you hear the CD, you feel a connection to greater humanity. Personally, listening to this work has been like getting immersed in a pool of energy. You've got to do it to know how beautiful the experience is...
Eternally enlightening in ways the masters have previously experienced
author: Ed BalldingerInvariably, it appears that the purpose of making Crowned Compassion is indefinable. This is the right thing, for in the mystery of the mystic mind, definition has form and formation does not a mystic make. These words and music, mixed together on occasion, are soothing to the soul. They are intelligent to the mind. They are passionate to the heart and from the heart of their creator, Zayra Yves. Zayra begins the entire formlessness of this project by inviting each listener into an eternal vision of everything contained and released. The journey from that point on is up to those who seek, the path each walks, and all who will hope to find. Her sound is fluent like a gentle mountain brook, calmly calling deer to come and water safely, and Mother Earth must be proud of this eternal child. Zayra’s voice is comforting, desirable, bold and tender; full of vibrations that call all humans everywhere to live in peace and a more complete harmony. If you don’t have a copy of this CD, buy one now. You may end up purchasing and giving away several more before it’s all said and done – or will it ever be?
In a voice as hypnotic and mesmerizing as the words she writes,
author: Edge Life MagazineIn a voice as hypnotic and mesmerizing as the words she writes, poet Zayra Yves shares her very soul in this highly creative CD. Her imagery is stunning as she evokes in the listener a yearning for unity, and peace, in a manner that assures us it is coming. Joined by background music that helps set the tone, Zayra takes us on a journey of passion, emotions and love as it relates to the world around us. A leading voice amongst a cadre of up and coming American Poets, Zayra is amongst the most eloquent you will ever read or hear.
Zayra's voice resurrects the best of the 60's, a plethora of vocal treasures.
author: Jim DunlapZayra's voice resurrects the best of the 60's, a plethora of vocal treasures. She sounds like a young Emmy Lou Harris crossed with Marianne Faithful. The entire thing gave me cold chills. I felt like I was listening to the very first presentation of a new song by Janis Ian or Melanie. The content of the songs reminds me of Desiderata. This is truly a marvelous rendition of musical bon bons, even while it isn't really songs at all, but poems set to music. Awesome, I'd say, fits it perfectly.
Not the first time I've been impressed by you voice.
author: Carrol Denny/poet suseannI've just listened to Crowned Compassion and loved the use of the virtue in natural metaphores. Framed excellence in such a calm and exquisit voice.~Carrol Denny/poet;Suseann

An intelligent, superbly crafted work with universal appeal
author: Mike BegbieAn Amazing Anothology - Spoken for Humanity! Reviewer: Mike Begbie Zayra Yves has produced a work that should go down as a landmark of the genre. Yves examines the full gamut of human emotion. She lulls us into lassitude, then delivers a gut-blow that brings us back to our very basic reality. She takes us from an awareness of our lowest origins in the stardust from which we spring, to the agony of mans' inhumanity to man, and arrives at our highest aspirations of love and compassion. An intelligent, superbly crafted work with universal appeal. I am proud to be associated with this incredibly talented person. Be very aware..."Crowned Compassion" is not her crowning glory - it has only just begun! Mike Begbie Harare Zimbabwe Africa August 8th 2006
Eloquent, heartfelt, and beautifully produced - poetry comes to life!
author: Michael NicholsThis compilation by Bay Area poet and artist Zayra Yves breathes life into the poetic art form -- her eloquent and heartfelt writing is powerful to read, and all the more compelling when recorded as the spoken word. A carefully and mindfully produced and scored compendium of moving works that cover spiritual mysticism, erotic and agapic love, and a landscape of exotic lands and emotions the recording is powerful and accessible to all audiences. This CD is akin to the difference between reading a great play and seeing a world-class production of it -- this is the full realization of the art form, filled with rich tracks that merit listening again and again.
