notes
"Under The Influence" was written in hommage to all the guitarists, musicians and bands who have influenced me over my musical journey, who have kept me passionate and feeling alive whenever I hear their music.
Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Mississippi John Hurt, Jorma Kaukonen, Reverend Gary Davis, Jerry Garcia, The Stones, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Jacob Miller, Fela Kuti, Tommy Bolin, and so many others...
There are 3 main styles or 3 "playlists" if you wish, depending on your mood, though not in that order on the record:
The Blues; specifically Delta and Country Blues. Rock'n'Roll.
And what is commonly referred to as World Music; in this case, Reggae, African and South American Music.
I was so very fortunate to play with the best musicians I've ever met, they gave it their all and I can't thank them enough:
Rob Arthur, my producer also on Keyboards and Vocals; Charley Drayton on Drums, Bass and Vocals; Tony Garnier on Bass; Bashiri Johnson on Percussion; Will Lee on Bass, Drums and Vocals.
Completing the band were: Mark Rivera and Carl Fischer on Horns, Lew Soloff on Trumpet, Larry Campbell on Fiddle, with guest appearances by Niko Bolas, Tim Hatfied, Sandrine Lee and Chrissy Amphlett on b.u. Vocals.
We were blessed to have Tim Hatfield and Niko Bolas engineer this CD, seemingly effortlessly, they both just made everything sound so good.
We had a blast making this music and I hope you'll enjoy it.

Excelleny Bluesy rock CD
author: Xavier P. and RadioIndy“Under The Influence” by Zak Alister is an impressive rock album, bearing a myriad of unique sounds and musical influences. The CD includes elements of blues, rock n’ roll, and world music. The CD includes top-notch production and musicianship, especially guitarwork. The highlight of the CD is the excellent songwriting, producing hook-filled bluesy rock songs. “Coconut Blues” makes a very lively opening for “Under the Influence.” This blues-rock tune delivers some excellent electric guitar work, and immediately acquaints listeners to Zaks appealing voice. The heavily reggae-influenced “Sister of Mercy” again flaunts great song structure and lyrically explores themes of faith and hope, like many of the songs on this CD. “Riff for Frank” and “Slimy Fishes” are among this collection’s biggest rockers. Fans of Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones ought to add this CD to their collection, ASAP!
