Yelena started piano lessons at age four. She was a student in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, which is one of three countries on the Baltic Sea between Poland and Finland. At a young age she fell in love with the music of J. S. Bach and won several Bach competitions and awards, including at the Tambov summer festival at the birthplace of Sergei Rachmaninov. In 1986 she entered the Lithuanian Conservatory and graduated in 1991. She was subsequently invited to study under Leonard Hokanson at the Indiana University School of Music, and in the fall of 1992 entered the doctorate program there. During that time she also studied under David Baker, and in 1997 graduated Doctor of Music (D.M.) in classical Piano Performance with a minor in Jazz Studies. She became the leading solo performer for Indiana University academic and artistic events, including major events for Herman Wells, for Myles Brand, at President Brand's home, for the Board of Trustees, and at the home of former Board Chairman James Morrison. She is a prolific composer, is currently busy with new recording project using MIDI drummer and MIDI bass.
