SmoothJazz.com Review
author: Scott O'BrienSan Diego-based, internationally known guitarist Patrick Yandall strikes yet again with release number nine, LAWS OF GROOVITY. It’s another rewarding journey into brilliant artistry and musicianship from this versatile performer, with the spotlight this time out on his R&B and Latin Jazz personas. This album is loaded with delectable musical morsels, ranging from mellow (“It’s Our Time,” “Turn down the Lights” and “Madre”) to piquant (“Viejo Amigo” and “Gaviotas”). As long as I’m into the food analogies, I’ll mention that I’d like to think of this project as Soul food meets Mexican food. So grab the Tabasco sauce and let’s talk about the tunes on this disc… Patrick’s serves up ten originals and two savory covers, namely an energetic twist on the Ronnie Laws classic “Always There” and a sensual, dazzling read on Hannon Lane’s “Yearning for Your Love.” Other highlights to my ear include the outstanding title track, the funky “Let’s Flow” and the very cool “Law St. Locals.” The fact is, every single song on this album is killer. I’ve really come to expect satisfying listens from Patrick’s work, and LAWS OF GROOVITY is no exception. I’m happy to report that this one totally exceeds expectations. Score another big win for Patrick Yandall on LAWS OF GROOVITY. It’s music like this that will keep Smooth Jazz vibrant, vital, and progressively moving forward!
