notes

Yael was born in Santiago de Chile...in one of the southernmost southern countries of the world where deserts, waterfalls, glaciers and mountains coexist in a 4000 km coastline. Since she was very small she was already dancing, singing and going to bed to the sounds of Michael Jackson. At 5 she started playing the piano. Always humming made up tunes, she ended up grabbing the guitar at 13, writing her own songs and participating on whatever festival came her way. By the time she turned 18 she had already won a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. So suitcases in hand she left all she knew to pursue a dream. In Boston she met amazing people and her mind and heart opened wide to a new world of music and perception. Giving in to a much deeper appreciation for sound and the power it has to change every living and non living thing she was then convinced that music was indeed a powerful tool towards generating a much more loving, understanding, peaceful and respectful world. In 2001 she edited her fist EP entitled "The Other Side" a compilation of songs she had written during her first year in Boston. Later in 2004 she edited her first LP entitled "Common Ground"...featuring some of Yael´s solo work as well as collaborations with some of the most talented musicians around the globe. Hailed by the Chilean press as "the new female promise of the national scene" and "one of the top 50 albums of the year" by Rolling Stone Chile, Yael continues to work hard towards spreading the music in all 5 continents together with her friend/partner/soulmate/spacetraveler Hungarian musician Dani Endrei. She has also participated in musical theater, produced music festivals and is continuously collaborating with artists of various backgrounds, composing music for films and performing live in Chile, USA and Europe.

Wow. This is one of those CD's that comes along every now and then and just hits you and goes right through you. Described by the artist herself as 'electro-organic', the music encompasses folk, pop and experimental electronica. But the star of the show is Yael's very engaging vocal styling. Again, wow. Although many possess a great set of pipes, you just know when you're hearing a voice with something special. That honesty and integrity of delivery that you hear from a artist deliberately and consciously creating and streaming herself authentically. This is very original and very powerful. Her lyrics are positive and uplifting, approaching 'new age'-iness, but sounding so real that they never cross any uncomfortable lines. I hear her voice and her message and have to concur. Songs are very esoteric, but very melodic and strong, often being grounded by a backbeat or loop. Even on instrumental passages there is constant interest, a testament to Yael's ability to ingrain the music with the same sense of immediacy that her vocals also bring. Old-tyme sounds lend a feel of other times, and other-worldly sounds bring other cultures into the mix without sacrificing the moment and the new sound Yael has got going on. Throughout, the programming is excellent - crisp and bright. It's a great recording. A beautiful CD of breathtaking depth and artistry. Engaging every minute of the way along. World music infusion through her collaboration with artists around the globe, but still decidedly electronica and with Yael's signature vocals all over. I love it. Yael is a world musician and vocal stylist of the highest calibre. A breath of fresh air, so take a deep breath all and enjoy. Steve Allat, The Muse’s Muse.

Common Ground is one of the most beautifully produced CD's that we've come across. Yael Meyer is the soft, sensual voice delicately layered over the provocative South American influenced rhythms. It is so difficult to classify, or should I say pigeonhole this CD into a genre; what the heck I'm saying it here first; TO HECK WITH GENRES, you should buy this CD simply because its wonderful! You can’t go wrong with this CD. Yael has delivered a very eclectic mix of sounds, thoughts and visions-yes I said visions- on Common Ground. A number of the tracks have a Stuart Matthewman feel to them, and you all know how I love his work with Sade. So needless to say this album hits a very special place. There’s a section at the end of the song Tanango that has a very Chilean-Venezuelan tango style accordion that is just so darn cool!! This is driving, working, chilling, sexing and grooving music at it’s finest; there are so many different atmospheres and moods that can be set with this CD you simply can’t go wrong.

  • relaxing sounds that are good for the soul...

Found Yael via myspace and rushed over to purchase the cd. The greatest collection of music I've encountered in quite some time. I was on the highway, got cut off and began getting angry. Then I was like, ahhh, this music is so good. I highly suggest this to anyone familiar with and looking to escape the wretched world of stress. The relaxing sounds are good for the soul.

  • A Wonderful Debut!!!!
author: Autumn Moss, Happy House Records

Wow. Yael´s music and the meticulous production of her debut album are truly amazing. I LOVED IT!!! The songs are woven like sonic tapestries and her voice commands your attention because she sings her whole heart out, fearlessly. Yael collaborates with various musicians who give the album an eclectic and expansive feel (you are kept wandering what intruments they've used...) Yet, the album is so connected, flowing like a soft charged current. It's like she's walking through a house filled with charming and sourcerous creatures and has to keep naming them all. Yael Meyer has a unique voice and a fresh, grounded, connected sound. She writes very organic songs with strong melodies and inspired arrangements. You can tell she is searching, and she is finding so much on her way to the top! JUST LISTEN TO IT!!!!
