(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

French acoustic gypsy music inspired by the greatest guitarist of all times: Django Reinhardt. We also blend many world music sounds into it.

notes

"Do not miss an opportunity to see one the greatest guitar players I’ve ever seen ...and I don’t say that lightly."
Josh Baron, Relix Magazine

"a John Coltrane-ish search for a moment of musical nirvana..."
Phil Gallo, Variety

"Don't miss this opportunity to see a truly astomishing talent in action"
All about Jazz

For this new album, I've been focusing more on compositions, and on the mood. I didn't want it to be another Django cover kind of album.
You'll find various influences : Django, Middle East, and maybe some impressionistic colors too.
I like to think of Music as a soundtrack.
Depending on your mood, your position in Time and Space, your personality, your culture, you'll appreciate different styles of music at different times.
I never listened to the notes but always was drawn into the mood, and that's how I expect this album to be : a suite of moods helping your soul to travel.

"The disc shows off Wrembel's limber chops in a variety of settings, including ebullient French-Gypsy swing, moody ballads, sultry raga-influenced numbers and a lithe cover of Mongo Santamaria's 'Afro Blue'. "

Hello, I'm fond of Stephane Wrembel's gypsy playing (I play too) but I have been very surprised and pleased to hear that he has a lot of other musical talents. His playing is very personal and inventive, so it's a great CD to refresh your musical ideas as a player, and really appreciable for a classic listener ;)

  • I love gypsy jazz, and this CD makes it timely and modern.

This album is incredible. I listened to it over and over when I got it, and right now it is still what I'm listening to most often. It's the best album purchase I've made in a long time.

I recently saw the film Sweet and Lowdown with Sean Penn. I never thought much of Sean Penn before I saw this film. Now, it's the only Sean Penn film (DVD) of his I own. I don't like buying things I never use. When I heard The Stephane Wrembel Trio on KMHD, my jaw dropped. Probably just like Sean Penns' did in the movie when he ran into Django himself. If you want to go for a ride on a moonlit night on the back of a caravan wagon and feel the gypsy in your soul, then check out this CD. I like owning things I use a lot.

  • An astounding artist...
author: Aaron Luis Levinson (Grammy Winning Producer)

This CD is a beautifully thought out project that highlights the diversity and intelligence of its author. If you are a fan of Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ali Abdul Majeed, Harmonious Wail or Django himself you will be enchanted by this superb release. Viva Stephane Wrembel!

  • If you like 1930s-style jazz, you will love this CD!

Wrembel and his band are amazing! I've been to see them many times at Barbes in Brooklyn and they never cease to blow me away. Stephane is an incredible guitarist, and the percussionist plays a washboard with a tin pie plate, saucepan, and miscellaneous objects attached to it, with thimbles on his fingers. This CD has several of their own lovely compositions as well as a few covers (including Django Reinhardt, Dizzy Gillespie, and Mongo Santamaria). If you like 1930s-style jazz, you will absolutely love this CD!

  • The Wrembel CD We've Been Waiting For
    author: Craig Bumgarner

Anyone who has seen Stephane Wrembel in concert the last couple years knows he had something like this up his sleeve. We knew it was going to good, just didn't know it was going to be THIS incredibly good! His unique style takes gypsy jazz in a new direction but in a timeless familiar way. Most of the songs are Wrembel originals and he is clearly in control throughout. Besides Wrembel's stellar playing, composition and arrangements, Jerad Engle on bass is the perfect foil for Wrembel. They work so well together, a duet album is imaginable someday. David Langlois on washboard adds substantially to the unique character of this recording though I don't think it captures the excitement Langlois can generate in concert. If you like gypsy jazz but have been wondering where does it go now, this CD is well worth listening to. In many ways Wrembel is way past gypsy jazz and into a whole new world of acoustic jazz and world music. You gotta hear it. Craig
