notes

The name of this band is "Why Not Sea Monsters?" It is made up of singer/songwriter Justin Roberts and producer/arranger Liam Davis. The songs are all original retellings of bible stories from the Hebrew Scriptures (aka: the Old Testament). Filled with Justin's trademark wit, warmth and catchy hooks, Justin takes on topics such as Noah building the ark and Moses at the burning bush with sometimes silly and sometimes touching results.

  • All Alone at the Top

There is nothing out there that compares to these great CDs! THANKS to Justin and Liam for creating these clever, gentle, thoughtful, curiosity-inspiring songs and lyrics. We have given this set of CDs as a gift to many friends (including to our Pastor) knowing they will be a gift that keeps on giving.

  • Lovely tunes.

Me and my kids are so enjoying the warm melodies (and fun lyrics) on this album. Thanks for the great music.

  • Why Not Sea Monsters? Songs from the Hebrew Scriptures
    author: Jeff Roberts

My twin toddlers listen to this album every day. We sing the songs to and from the day care, on family outings, and during mealtime. It enables me to teach my children about a loving God and develop a positive relationship with their Creator.

I absolutely love this album!!! I listen to it a lot even if the grands are not with me. LSC

  • My Kids Love This!
    author: Kelly Urbon

Sea Monsters is the most requested CD in our vehicle. WE listen to it almost daily and all sing along. The songs allow even adults to reflect on these classic Biblical stories in new ways.

Great sounds and words for kids. I will be introducing Bible stories with them. Thank you!

  • Absolutely Fantastic
    author: Marla Brandt

We love Justin Roberts but we were particularly impressed with this CD. The whole family loves it - it is a fun, hip way to get kids interested in Bible Stories.

  • Beautifully written and performed.

This CD was referred to me as a great set of songs for younsters and adults alike. I especially liked Why not a Spark and Where were you? Awesome and will stay with you a long time. I'm sending it out for baby gifts.

  • Love this CD!
    author: Shelley Dolley

Our whole family loves this CD. My 3 year old (also a fan of Yellow Bus) has stunned people with her knowledge of the Old Testament - based entirely on these songs. She especially likes telling people that God took a nap on the 7th day of creation. The teens in my husband's teenage youth group also think the CD rocks. Thanks Justin!

  • More mellow than other JR CDs, but catchy just the same
    author: Marie - Morgan's Mom

Morgan, my son, now 3 1/2, has been a big JR fan for most of his life. We have Great Big Sun, Yellow Bus, Not Naptime, Way Out and Meltdown. Since he's such a JR addict and practically knows every song by heart, we thought we'd try this CD out. Mellower or not, Morgan is singing along to all the songs just the same. His favorites on this CD are "Why Not A Spark" and "Giddy Up Gideon". I think we both prefer the New Testament CD just because the songs are a bit more upbeat and you can't help but get a few giggles when you sing some of the songs. Overall, we enjoyed this CD very much, but feel it is quite different from previous JR works.

  • Great. All my kids love it.
    author: Rushgold

Be careful: it's very catchy! Fun tunes, clever lyrics, easy to sing. Currently, the most popular CD in our car. (Wonder why he used the Christian Bible as the basis for songs from the Hebrew Scriptures, but -- whatever. They are terrific.

  • Another superb release from Justin
    author: Jennifer

Absolutely fantastic. We bought this CD and the New Testament one to introduce our two interfaith kids (3 and 5) to the stories of their history. Worked like a charm -- they are fascinated, and the music and lyrics are lovely and funny and moving, to boot. Hats off to Justin for perhaps his best effort yet.

  • Beautiful, meaningful, fun
    author: Scott

Just beautiful music. The first three times I listened to "Where Were You?" I couldn't keep from getting a lump in my throat, it was so beautiful. It made me feel comfortably small in the big scheme of things. Get it--now. And, oh yeah, the kids'll like it too.

  • The Hebrew Scriptures cd is fabulous in every way.
    author: Laurie Clark

Actually, on a scale of 1 to 5, I give this cd a 10. I've waited a long, long time for the sotires from the Hebrew scritpures to be share with such grace. Even my 2 year old is singing about Moses.

  • I highly recommend this cd.
    author: Laurie Clark

The NT cd is fabulous. The tunes are catchy, the music is good, and the rendition of the scritpure stories are exactly right for children and adults - much grace. I"ve waited a long, long time for Christian children's songs and music to be this wonderful.

  • Music you might listen to without the kids
author: Heidi from the sunset coast

Justin's interpretations of popular stories kids know really connected with our 5 year old. She wanted to talk more about what she heard and gave us insights into her own understanding of the stories. The music is reminiscent of early JR albums. If you like Great Big Sun, you'll love this!

  • Amazing CD!
    author: Haven

Love this creative cd! Haven't heard any lyrics such as these done so well! Super fun for parents and kids!

  • Wow! Another great CD by Justin Roberts, plus an intro to bible stories!
    author: Suzanne Thomas

We have loved every one of Justin's CD's, and we have them all. This one is now my favorite, I listen to it even when my kids aren't in the car! My five year old son asks me to tell him the story behind each song, which is so cool. Justin and Liam remind us of how great these stories are, and they make them so fun and memorable. "Why not a spark" and "Where were you?" are my favorites.

  • well thought out way to intro kids to the scriptures
    author: Rev. Kate Colussy-Estes

As clergy its been hard to find good music for my 3 year old that a)I think is theologicaly sound and b) I can enjoy. I have found it! My daughter really loves this CD, so much that we haven't listened to many of her old JR faves recently!

  • True JR form! Brilliant and fun, not just for the kids, either!
    author: Jerilynn B

A fun and whimsical version of Sunday School songs!

  • A lot more fun than Sunday School
    author: Sophie Jenkins

My grandchildren love this CD and say it is a lot more fun than Sunday school. Now they remember the stores and sing along, as well as dance. Truly clever and joyous, as well as a great learning experience. Another great addition to Justin Roberts CDs.

  • Not Just for kids
    author: Meg Sima

Oh my...my husband is hogging this CD (and Why Not Sea Monsters, songs from the New Testament) and my kids had to steal them back from his car! That is how much we like these CDs. We listen to the songs and laugh at the lyrics (and then run for the Bible when our kids ask a question that we don't remember the answer to...keeping us on our toes, Justin is!). Favorites are many, but "Moses Thought it Odd" and "Here, Kitty, Kitty" are among the tops. On a family road trip this weekend, we listened to the two CDs over and over again, and never even touched the other CDs we'd brought.

  • My 3 year old and 6 year old love this CD!
    author: Sophie R

5+++++ stars!! The CD is wonderful and a great companion to the stories they are learning in Sunday School. But it's not just for Sundays we have it in our car continually!

  • they've done it again!
    author: laurie p.

Justin and Liam have turned out another amazing cd. Songs from the Hebrew Scriptures is everything you've come to think of when you think of their creations: musically gorgeous, and lyrically clever and witty. AND, this cd is downright educational! It offers a mixture of upbeat, infectious tunes as well as a couple of pierce-the-heart and make you weep tracks, all the while relating tales that kids and adults will easily grasp and love. It's an amazing piece of work.

  • We love this CD!!
    author: Anne Nelson

This CD has quickly rocketed to the top of our short "favorite CD's" list. Mom and Dad love the words, and our 2 year old and 4 year old love the music. There has been lots of dancing in our house since we opened this CD at Christmas. Favorites include the creation song and the Job song. Two thumbs up.
