Rich in harmonies and stories, clear eyed diatribes, outlaw weddings, anti Bush circuses and the insanity of war.

notes

The roots/folk duo Wishing Chair,
Kiya Heartwood and Miriam Davidson,
6th CD is titled Underdog.
Underdog is full of great Kiya penned songs,
"it's folk to the core," says Walter Tunis,
Music Critic, Lexington Herald-Leader .

There's the bluesy menace of "Underdog," political anthems like "Bully Circus," "Adagio" and "Outlaw Wedding,"
the bittersweet harmonies of "Fieldtown Road Construction," "Sidewalks" and "Be," historical ballads like "Sue Mundy" and "Calamity Jane" and rocking reflections
like "Oz," "One Real Song," and "Highway
Lullaby."

Produced in Austin by veteran
producer Mark Hallman (Ani DiFranco,
Eliza Gilkyson), the CD features guest
musicians Eamon Mcloughlin and Kym
Warner (The Greencards), Cisco Ryder
(Eliza Gilkyson), Robert McEntee (Navaro), and Brian Standefer (Patty Griffith).

"Raw, emotionally-charged lyrics meet
powerful instrumentation on this
collection of songs from Wishing Chair.
This Underdog wins!"
Stacy Yelton, Program Director, WUKY

  • Excellent work!
    author: Joseph Schultz

This CD really transcends genre, though WC is still obviously rooted in folk and womyn's music. The subject matter is personal, political and historical, and it blends pretty much seamlessly. The final track, Adagio, is unique not only among WC's body of work, but as a powerful anti-war statement. If you've enjoyed previous WC music, you should enjoy this; it's in the vein we've come to expect, but the blood keeps pumping more strongly!

  • Oh, man these two are like good whiskey, smoooooth but with enough burn to catch
    author: Miguel F Cardenas

I mean it, I have been listening to them from the beginning, "Singing with the Red Wolves", the strength of their songwriting is fresh and maintains a nice balance of internal and external reflection without any of the whininess or preachiness that so often occurs in contemporary songs about the current state of the world. So if you listen just for the music or you like the sociopolitical commentary spread throughout as well(Outlaw Wedding, Bully Circus) Wishing Chair is a very satisfying listen that gets better with each spin.

  • Kiya and Miriam are in great shape, wishes come true
    author: Pieter from Holland

Marvelous, almost best record from Kiya upon today. As i have all the Wishing Chair records in my collection and owning Kiya's solo -and CD's with Stealin'Horses, i think i can make this choice. Being a little more country, sounding a little Fleetwood Mac (underdog), the slows are still the best, i prefer Calamity Jane. If you order this folks you get 12 songs on a brilliant CD. As always the production of Mark Hallman is great, knowing him from the work for Eliza an Iain, he delivers again a excellent job. Listen especially to the organ on OZ, played by Miriam .

  • A phenomenal collection of songs! A must have CD!
    author: Kym Tuvim

It's so rare that I LOVE a record from start to finish. From the moment I got this album, it has lived in my cd player. Every song is solid. Every song is a gem. The performances and arrangements are beautiful, surprising, textured and they will fill you up with soul and spirit! As far as I'm concerned, the only thing missing is a Grammy nomination for this remarkable album.
