notes
Sometimes, in order for an idea to be realized, or a movement to succeed, we must call upon the help of others. Things aren't always laid out in front of you, easily accessable, or clear in their purpose. But with the words, wisdom, & efforts of like minded individuals... Anything is possible.
The title "Some Assembly Required" isn't just a clever name for WD4D's first full length album, it's truly the way things got done. Deejaying and making beats on various equiptment for 10 + years, WD4D has developed a sound all his own. Hip hop beats reminscent of the golden era without
sounding too throw-back, as well as some more current, even futuristic, sounds too.
Though almost half of this project is instrumental, the collaborations with emcees are a welcome addition. Some of the featured guests are Awol & Existereo of the Shapeshifters (LA), Bukue One out of Oakland, Seattle's CNI, Xololanxinxo (OMD), Matre from the League, and more. A diverse line-up of artists accessable to more than just the "backpacker" undeground hip-hop crowd.
Another aspect of WD4D's production is his ability to scratch with the best of them, but only show-case the skills when it fit's into the music. The use of live musicians is made on a number of tracks also, and avoids the cliche "live hip-hop" sound quite nicely. Bridging some musical gaps maybe, but certainly no crossover material here.
This music will no doubt appeal to fans of artists like Madlib, Living Legends, Dj Krush, Aceyalone, 2 Mex, Atmosphere, and RJD2 amongst others.
