Warren Buttler's musical journey continues with his second CD THE CULTIVATION OF GRACE.
Composed, recorded and produced alone in his studio this new recording features 7 new instrumental visions, a 15th century alman recreation and buttler's own version of Waltzing Matilda for a total of nine songs. Cultivation is the follow up recording to the surprisingly successful Properties of Mercy and although the new cuts ARMADA and HIKING WITH THE SHINING PATH are Spanish guitar orientated, THE CULTIVATION OF GRACE includes: GEORGIA NIGHTS which features the square neck Dobro as background, WIFE SLEEPS is a gentle, finger style, steel string lullaby, CALL SUNDAY is a lament, ONE TANGO/NO DANCING takes you to a gypsy, waterfront dive, and REALIZATIONS simply stands alone.
THE CULTIVATION OF GRACE was over a year in the making: "I often felt lost in the music I was making" Buttler says,
"I had originally intended Cultivation to be a Celtic Cd, and somehow this music just had to come out. I guess I can never force myself in a direction. I just start painting musical pictures in my head and they take me where they want..... I really can't plan my music---it would be like planning what you are going to dream just before you fall asleep."
THE COVER:
"I've gotten into the habit of using the graphic of my covers to portray some of the elements of music inside---- I'm an anthropology and archeology fan---and I have always had a tremendous interest in earth signs. Shapes, figures, drawings, created by early man in the surface of the earth.....on the cover of Properties I used the hummingbird from the plains of Nazca in South America and a desert background because the music had truly burning to come out of me for years.
On Cultivation the backgrounds are a much cooler green---the sign of life and Growth, and that's what I hope this Cd is for me ,the actual cultivation of grace within my music and myself. The earth symbol is the White Horse ( although some say it's a dragon) of Effington in Britain carved into the chalk deposits during the Bronze age. You might find it an interesting search for the meaning s of the figures hummingbird and horse (dragon).
NEW INSTRUMENTS
"On Cultivation I utilized several new instruments for me----the square neck dobro plays a great part in Georgia Nights, as the moaning textural background. I've fooled around some on this instrument and love the sound, it is however a whole separate discipline to play.......I also used for the first time an Octave Mandolin. Standard Mandolin I've played for awhile and used on the Properties CD. The Octave Mandolin is larger, has a longer neck scale and provides a deeper, droning sound as well as an interesting melody background a cross between a guitar and a mandolin. You hear it on Waltzing Matilda especially and on One Tango No Dancing. I also used Roland's new Gr-33 Guitar synthesizer which has a wonderful violin patch that you can hear on several of the selections on Cultivation.
Technique
"My rule always is the note you hear must have actually been struck---- I never use computer loops or enhancements---- I do make extensive usage of Roland's series of Gr-30 and Gr-33 guitar synthesizers as well as guitar effects processors, however no midi/keyboard substitutions, the sounds you hear were created on the guitar, mandolin, or banjo."
Next
"My hopes are that THE CULTIVATION OF GRACE reaches people the way that THE PROPERTIES OF MERCY did----- I have been overawed at some of the email I've received from people who've bought or heard Properties and I hope that We've continued to make the same connection with Cultivation---- please feel free to email me always with any comments, input or suggestions you have----- anyone who purchases or listens to my music is always free to do so....... Where to next? I'm in the process of building a new studio here at my house on my island, and for the next project I have in mind something more lush, with extensive guitar synthesizer backgrounds, and possibly purchasing and using a Chap man Stick as the stringed melody instrument"
