His songs shine with a dark brilliance ,lyrics provide depth, sung by Gillespie's attractively dry vocals similiar to Steve Kilby from the Church. One of the most gifted songwriters to emerge from New Zealand in the 80's.

The success of Kiwi songwriter Gillespie's first acoustic album ‘Wayward Son’ resulted in Gillespie coming to the attention of producer Trevor Lucas (Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Goanna) and being signed by CBS Records (NZ). Lucas produced Gillespie’s second album; the electric rock/pop of ‘New Locations’ in Jan-March 1986, at the Music Farm in Australia’s Byron Bay, with a stellar cast of local musicians including Marcia Howard & Rose Bygrave (Goanna), Phil Emmanuel, and Denny Stanway.
This albums’ 1987 release saw Wayne in the New Zealand charts and playing live around New Zealand with his 6 piece New Locations Band. The first single off this album ‘Losing One’ was also including in the soundtrack for “The Leading Edge” a ski adventure movie set in the Southern Alps of New Zealand’s South Island.
Wayne relocated to Sydney in 1987 to support the album’s release by CBS Australia. He played live extensively around Australia and made several guest TV appearances (including a memorable appearance on the Don Lane show with Robert Downey Jnr). He also played several shows with Suzanne Vega at the Auckland Town Hall on her 1988 NZ tour.
Gillespie and Lucas were also planning to record a follow up album together. This album was the last album Trevor Lucas produced before his untimely death in 1989.
Wayne’s Notes on New Locations
"In 1985 Trevor Lucas’ interest in producing my second album after hearing the Wayward Son debut changed my world drastically.A chance to work with the man who was a member of UK folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention, who also had produced several of Sandy Denny’s beautiful solo albums as well as number one hits for Australian bands Redgum and Goanna".
"For me title turned out to be prophetic; a year after making the album. I had gone from Indy acoustic singer/songwriter to CBS recording artist and had re-located from New Zealand to Australia."
"Despite the 80’s sound this album has a number of songs I’m very proud of such as “Invercargill”( the story of a man who “mistook his wife for a car”)And Trevor’s’ favourite “Heart’s For” , some re-recording of songs from Wayward Son (Number Thirty-seven and Ten Francs) and a great compliment of musicians."
"New Locations while charting in New Zealand failed to achieve the international commercial success predicted by the music press and the CBS executives (thanks especially to MD Michael Glading who was a great champion of this album). However it’s still a must for all those musical historians, Fairport Convention completists and fans of Lloyd Cole and Lou Reed circa 1980’s."

PS
"Plans where being made to record a follow-up album with Trevor but tragically he died in his sleep at the age of 44 in 1989. A premature loss of a great musician, producer and personality".
PPS
"The album was dedicated to a friend of mine Barry Pitcon and his great love of music (he had tuned me in to such diverse influences such as Lou Reed and Bert Jansch) before he also departed way too soon".

Wayne Gillespie BIO
Born in Auckland, New Zealand into a musical family (father Mick a Jazz pianist and sister Sally a clarinet teacher), Gillespie was first inspired to write songs after hearing Leonard Cohen’s “You Know Who I Am” on a local radio show at the age of 14.
Some years later Gillespie makes his professional debut busking in Paris subways, playing to audiences in London folk clubs and Sydney’s Darlinghurst cafes before returning to Auckland in the early 80’s.
Wayne quickly became one of the leading figures in the prominent Auckland Acoustics movement playing pubs, cafes and folk clubs augmented by his band of brilliant musicians, Denny Stanway (vocals), Brendan Power (Harmonica) and Bob Shepheard (Fretless Bass).
Wayne's first album, ‘Wayward Son’ was released on Gillespie’s own independent label in June 1984. The album was acclaimed by the NZ rock press and made the finals of the New Zealand Music awards in the Most Promising Vocalist & Folk Album of the Year categories. The song ‘Away With You’ also won an APRA NZ songwriting award in the same year.
The success of ‘Wayward Son’ resulted in Gillespie coming to the attention of producer Trevor Lucas (Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Goanna) and being signed by CBS Records (NZ). Lucas produced Gillespie’s second album; the electric ‘New Locations’ in Jan-March 1986, at the Music Farm in Australia’s Byron Bay, with a stellar cast of local musicians including Marcia Howard & Rose Bygrave (Goanna), Phil Emmanuel, and Denny Stanway.
Wayne went on to record his third album "Living in Exile" a blend of Roots/Folk/Rock also for Sony NZ (1993) and later joining the New Zealand music award wining band the Narcs, producing their third album Push the Boat for the Hark label in 1996.
His 5th Album "Live at the Bunker" (2005) with guitarist Nigel Gavin is also available. See website for more details.
