notes

Bach's six English Suites are among his very finest early compositions for solo harpsichord and date from around 1715. This 2 cd set presents all six suites played with all repeats on a spectacular and rare French-style instrument by one of the world's very finest harpsichord makers, Walter Burr of New York. The performances have been widely praised, including by the great Gustav Leonhardt, who especially hailed this release, and the recording was described as one of "the important" recordings of these works in the American Record Guide. With two exceptionally well-filled cds (78 and 79 minutes), this release, the first volume in a complete survey of Bach's harpsichord music, provides outstanding value, as well as seminal performances of six of Bach's greatest works.

Peter Watchorn, born in Australia, has been active as a harpsichordist since 1974. In 1985, at the Boston Early Music Festival he was presented with the coveted Erwin Bodky Memorial Award for his performance of the second Englisgh Suite, which won universal praise from judges and audiences alike. His principal harpsichord teacher was Isolde Ahlgrimm, with whom he studied in Vienna between 1985 and 1992. He has published numerous articles about her life and career, and completed a full-length biography, soon to be published by Ashgate Publishing in London. Peter Watchorn received his doctoral degree from Boston University in 1995, his dissertation being a study of Bach's English Suites. Resident since 1987 in Boston MA, his distinguished career as performer, recording artist, teacher and scholar has taken him throughout Europe and the United States, as well as back to his native Australia. Well-known also as a harpsichord builder, and a member of the staff of Hubbard Harpsichords for many years, responsible, among other things, for musical and tonal finishing, he has continued to collaborate as performer with other makers throughout the world in presenting the finest of their instruments to the public. This recording is the first in a series which will encompass the complete harpsichord output of J. S. Bach over the next few years.
