notes
“I’m totally in love with Harvey’s album -- he is amazing! We have to do something togeher. He undersands Brazilian music in a way that’s very unusual, maybe because he loves it so much. He’s got the spirit; he’s a great musician.”
Ivan Lins

Hi, and thanks for checking out my newest CD, “Amigos Brasileiros.” This is a chance for you to hear the best of three different generations of great Brazilian composers and musicians -- 40 of ‘em on this CD!!
This was mostly recorded in Brazil, with a couple of more songs recorded in the San Francisco Bay Area, with some of the great Brazilian talent we are blessed to have living here.
Most of these songs have never been recorded before. You will get a panorama of many different Brazilian rhythms and styles, so besides samba (acoustic traditional and electric funky) you will also hear baião, choro, marcha rancho, valsa, and a few that are difficult to classify! Each track features a different group, with formations ranging from piano/clarinet duo to 13-piece horn ensemble...
I’ve been travelling annually to Brazil since 2000, staying around 2 months each visit. Over the years I’ve been fortunate to meet, play with, and befriend some of the most amazing musicians in that amazing country. I’m proud to have performed with Airto Moreira & Flora Purim, Filó Machado, Paulo Bellinati, Guinga, Jovino Santos Neto and many more...
On “Amigos Brasileiros” you will hear the music (and playing) of such well-known masters as Marco Pereira and Guinga, but there may also be a lot of new names for you. If so, I’m very proud to introduce them to new listeners, but at the same time I’m very humbled to be playing with such profound musicians and composers.....
One note: you’ll notice I’m charging a bit more for this CD than usual. I’m sorry to do so, but I’ve paid for this completely out of my own pocket, and have spared no expense; besides paying 44 musicians (4 great string players from California + the 40 brasileiros) I used great studios and engineers, spent dozens of hours mixing, and mastered with Bernie Grundman, who has mastered CDs for Dori Caymmi, Guinga, Sergio Mendes, and Joe Zawinul. This has all added up! So PLEASE consider this before you go and burn a copy for someone -- let ‘em spend a few bucks!
thank you!
Harvey

Amigos Brasileiros
author: Anne Lenoir RamlerAmigos Brasileiros is the BEST CD made by a clarinetest so far, because Harvey went to great lengths to expand his style to many great forms of Brazilian music, and he also researched his music by travelling to Brazil many times for study of these styles. He also recorded with the very finest musicians in the world, and went to great lengths to create a perfect sounding recording. I loved some of his more danceable numbers, and plan to learn them some day soon. Anne Lenoir Ramler
