Vocalogy pours a 200-proof blend of four voices into a mix of top instrumentalists to deliver a kick of jazz harmony

notes

VOCALOGY is a jazz vocal quintet which brings a distinctive new sound to the world of vocal jazz. Vocalogy's unique performances of jazz and standards have delighted audiences nationwide in festivals, concerts, clinics and clubs for over six years.

Christine Helferich is the group's exciting lead singer; alto David Thorne Scott, tenor John Knutson, and bass Chris Morey provide solid support and take outstanding solo features. Pianist Gerhard Guter occasionally steps out from behind the keys to add his smooth voice to the mix. The group utilizes its range of five-and-a-half octaves to execute intricate and vocally demanding material in a way that seems effortless. They thrill audiences with their improvised solos, tight ensemble work, and dazzling harmonies.

Vocalogy arose from an artist-in-residency program under Grammy-Award nominee Phil Mattson in 1998. Now self-directed, Vocalogy performs a collection of innovative arrangements written by members of the group.

Still think I was writing for the HiLos, but where was the big band behind them ? I totally enjoyed the C D.

I just got DISTILLED last week, and I love it! Christine Helferich IS the new Bonnie Herman! Congrats - it sounds fantastic!

  • A step beyond traditional vocal jazz groups
author: Peder Karlsson, The Real Group

I like the record, good band, good singing, good arrangements. I like their version of Oh, Darlin’-- you gotta have courage to do that song. In general I like the arrangements a lot, very good harmonies, good work. It seems to me that they take a few steps outside all the influences from previous vocal groups, you know, Gene Puerling and all those guys. For me, it's great to hear that they do a cappella, but of course I like what they do with the band also. It's a great cd, and I'm looking forward to the next one already!

  • Well. If you want to hear some amazingly intricate vocal gymnastics, this is it
    author: Michael Diltz

As far as arrangements go, these folks know how to do it. I am thoroughly impressed with the variety, vocal gymnastics and overall musicianship involved in bringing this CD to my ears. Thanks. Look forward to hearing more.

  • Clear and vibrant voice
    author: Don Shelton, musician, L.A.

“Distilled” is done with great musicality and the many talents shine through like crazy!! That is for openers… I have carried it in my car and listened for several times back and forth to the desert and it really is done well. Christine’s voice is so clear and vibrant and really spearheads the whole group. The many styles demonstrated are just terrific… I enjoy it a lot!

  • Very cool stuff indeed, esp. the pop music element
author: Peter Eldridge, New York Voices

Very cool stuff indeed. Great singing and arrangements. I especially love the tunes 'Time is a Healer' (Christine’s lead vocal is tremendous) and all the wonderful reharmonization on 'Old Friends' (really nice vibe on that one as well). There are a lot of great things going on with this CD!

  • Impressive charts, wonderful group
author: Michele Weir, Jazz singer, Los Angeles, CA

I was so impressed when I heard Vocalogy live. They are able to execute fantastically intricate and vocally demanding arrangements in a way that seems so effortless. The solos are great, the arrangements interesting; they are truly a wonderful group that is well worth checking out.

  • Musical and exciting group

Vocalogy is one of the most musical and exciting groups I have heard in a while. The arrangements, the energy and audience appeal is first rate. I think you'll be hearing more from this group for years to come.
