notes

Seattle filk duo Vixy & Tony each got into filk separately, he at California filk and general conventions and she at house filks and conventions in Washington. If they'd both stayed home, they might never have met, but, being wandering souls, they met in the middle at Orycon in Portland, Oregon. After a couple of successive Orycons spent listening to one another, they came together by chance in concert at one fateful Baycon in 2005 ("wanna sing with me?" "sure, why not?") and have been performing together ever since.

Singer and songwriter Vixy is formerly of the filk group Escape Key, originally formed with her husband Matthew on guitar and their friend Audrey Eschright on flute. Their CD, Shadowbeast, is still available through their website and on CD Baby. As luck would have it, just as Matthew decided to quit guitar in order to spend more time on mad science and wilderness adventures, Tony came along with a guitar, a golden ear, and a dream of producing an album. The result, Thirteen, was released in April 2008.

Disguised by day as Michelle Dockrey, mild-mannered officemouse, and Tony Fabris, mild-mannered codemonkey, they spend their evenings and weekends in a secret underground lair known as MonkeyBrains Studios, plotting world domination through audio recording. Or playing Rock Band. Whichever.

MAL'S SONG alone makes this album worth buying!

  • Meaningful and moving.

The music's great, but what I love most about this CD is the incredible lyrics. "My Love Was Like the Moon" never fails to elicit a wry chuckle, "Strange Messenger" brings tears to my eyes, and "Companion" leaves me uplifted. Rarely if ever has a CD spoken so strongly to me.

Very good stuff! I gt this because AJ Adams did some tracks for Apprentice, and I'm glad to have discovered such talented musicians that way. I look forward to their next CD. (As a side note, I suggest if possible more collaborations with fiddlers/violinists, the instrument complements Vixy's voice very well.)

I don't have anything new to say. It was a lovely album. My daughter and I both really like it. I bought two. I recomend all of my friends should buy another copy and give it to a stranger (or friend) so that they can enjoy the music.

  • Well done!

Just received Thirteen, and both my wife and I found our jaws absolutely on the floor. Amazingly wonderful quality. The mix is exceptional. The songs and performances are a wonder. There is not a SINGLE song on this album I'm not thrilled to listen to. Bravo!

  • Just...WOW!

I'm just totally blown away by this album! Between Michelle's voice and Tony's guitar I'm lost in the songs! Definitely a keeper and one to get friends addicted to! :-)

  • Awesome!

After hearing one track with Michelle's amazing, vibrant voice, I was hooked. This is real music, with real instruments and - most importantly - REAL singing! Tony's compositional musicianship is terrific, and the overall production was done with love. These lyrics engage my attention, and I'm usually not interested in lyrics. The storytelling is enhanced and complimented by the music - this is good songwriting. I have not heard the MP3 versions, but the tracks have enough sonic content that I bet the uncompressed versions sound better. Best music I've discovered in years!

  • What's not to love?
    author: Robyn

After patiently(?) waiting for this album to be completed, my expectations have been highly exceeded. The music I'm so familiar with in a live performance takes on depth and complexity with the addition of background vocals and multiple instruments. "Emerald Green" never fails to bring a feeling of pride and love when I hear it and "Mal's Song" brought tears to hear the chorus sung by a large group. This album is well worth spending the cashy money on several copies. You can't stop the signal. Keep flyin' !
