notes
Vieux Diop only solo album!!!!!!
Vieux Diop, whose real name is Alioune, takes the heart of West African music into new territory, making it modern without losing its ancient sight. Vieux owes his musical heritage not only to his mother, who was always singing the melodies and rhythms of Senegal, their West African homeland, but to his love of American music. “John Lee Hooker was my guy, and James Brown, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett.”
His first instrument, at age 11, was a set of trap drums, which he played on Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour’s first hit recording in the 1970s. He played with N’Dour’s band Jamono in Dakar and toured with him in Gambia.

Vieux Diop's music makes me smile!
author: Stacy @ CD BabyAround 10 years ago I was lucky enough to run across an album of music by Vieux Diop and since then it's always been one of my favorites. So, just the other morning I was wondering what Alioune might be up to these days, and presto!-(sounds of cheering)- here in the morning's new CDs to process is a new CD full of more of Vieux Diop's sweet music! The material here has a quieter feel than that of the 1995 release- instead of the full band with driving drums and electric bass, we have Vieux's subdued vocals and elegant kora performing his takes on West African traditional songs. Check it out- I bet you'll like it!
