notes

A pale rider on a drunken horse, he rises like a phoenix from the ashes of the strip mall with a cosmic cowboy cry. The sound begs the question: Where the hell did this guy come from? Victor Camozzi was born in Waco, Texas, and barely got to crawl in the dirt before being whisked away to the wilds of Idaho. There he grew up playing in horse pastures and irrigation ditches while his father worked as a prison psychologist and his mother taught retarded children. Together their dinner table conversations gave the future troubador a unique window on the world, and just what could go on--and go wrong--out there beneath the Big Sky. Eventually time turned the pastures into WalMarts and Old Navy’s. And after four years studying philosophy and girls in Moscow, Idaho, he split for California. Rambling between LA taquerias and San Francisco redwoods, he began collecting the misfits and missed opportunities that would form his signature sound. When the wind blew him back to Texas, like so many country outlaws before him, it was there he found the final notes he’d been looking for. Produced with the help of Texas legend Walt Wilkins, Victor’s debut album “3 Peso Cigar” flips the bird to convention to get-it-on with the truth…in all it’s messy, crazy, awkward beauty. So turn it up. Light it up. And enjoy.

  • Worth every Peso!!

Just like a like a cheap cigar tastes so damn good after a fifth of whiskey ... it's the absence of pretension and vanity that makes Victor Comozzi's music so priceless. On paper, it might seem a little loosely rolled, and rough around the edges, but therein lies it's perfection. I'd gladly pass up a case of Cuban Cohibas, and fine cognac for a swig from a bottle of rye and a puff of a 3 peso cigar around a fire with Victor Comozzi. This disk is an oasis of truth and honesty in a vast desert of overwrought, over produced, fluff. You can smell the dirt, and taste the smoke when you listen to these songs. From the poetry of his lyrics, grit of his vocal tone, and ease and comfort of his phrasing, to his tasty arrangements and instrumentation choices, Victor Comozzi shows that he would be right at home sharing a smoke and trading songs with Dylan, Springsteen, and Kristofferson.

That's what 3 Peso Cigar did to my expectations. Raw, honest vocals, the kind that took me back to an old Springsteen bootleg, which I played to shreds. And the music. It's beautiful. More polished but just as honest as Victor's singing. If the vocals are the beer, the music is the hammock. Then there's the writing. Light up the night, Fistful of nails, and my favorite, I'm gold, to name just a few. It's like poetry written by an old friend you didn't know you had. You remember things when you listen to this CD. Truthful things that feel good to think about again. 3 Peso Cigar is a great surprise. Well done Victor. I'm sure I'll play this to shreds too.
