VECTOR TRIO
Vector Trio began life in 1996 simply as Vector, the brainchild of trumpeter/composer Scott Forrey. Then a septet, the group delved into collective improvisation, free jazz, and deep harmolodic funk; a run of gigs on Washington, DC's U Street corrider culminated in the CD "Sonic Hieroglyph," released in 1997. The year 2000 saw a stripped-down Vector release "Contagious Images" as a quintet.
The new millennium brought about new challenges to Vector, now simply Vector Trio. The trio began making use of electronics, including looping devices and effects processors. Their work to date is showcased in their new, all original CD, "Plot Twist." The trio format allows the musicians to explore their voices and improvise in wide-open spaces, though the electronics often help create dense dreamscapes that make them sound like a much larger group. Vector Trio recently celebrated the release of Plot Twist with a Transparent Productions-hosted gig at Sangha, in Takoma Park, MD.
Vector Trio is:
Scott Forrey, trumpets, loops, electronics, and percussion
Gary Rouzer, fretless bass, loops, and electronics
Marshall Hughey, drums and landscape percussion

author: tim curryThis CD is a visual, organic journey that walks you through the musical machinations of the Vector Trio. You can nearly "see" what they are playing. Their musicianship shines as they play not just notes, but feelings. They don't just play on their instruments and electronics, but they "play". And it comes across very well. You can hear how tight this band is. For those of you into electronic Miles, Ornette Coleman, post Miles Coltrane or even today's Eric Truffaz, this CD is a must have.

Doesn't U Street suck now? Vector Trio is, however, the shit...
Sonic Alchemy!!!
author: dub c., sonic archtectRefreshingly innovative!!! Phenomenally multidimentional!!! Interesting and invigorating to say the least. I realize for this music, words are asinine, but anyway, here I go: Vector have truly achieved their musical vision. By stripping down the excess of previous incarnations, the leaner more dynamic Vector Trio finally owns up to the word, "Vector." By this I mean::: The individual sonic voices have a starting point or a point of focus and intent. By use of effects/looping, these individual voices are omnidirectionally expanded, thus sending the group sound to dimentions in sound previously unaware of by both creator and listener. Vector Trio's "Plot Twist" is a disturbingly beautiful artistic statement serving as the next step in the evolution of the same lineage as the great "esoteric" musics of Earth's past: i.e. Miles Davis (1967-1975), Sun Ra, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and so on. A much more focused, impactful, and important statement than 2000's "Contagious Images" (although a great record with some very innovative sonic soundscapes), and a total 180, quantum leap from 1997's, "Sonic Heiroglyph." I believe it of utmost importance for this group to continue on the musical path they have set ahead of them and continue the relentless sonic innovations!!! May the world's consciousness rise to meet you!!!
