notes

Eve since the early 1950-is, and all the way to her death, Vaska Ilieva (1924-2001) was awarded and given various honors in many European countries. Besides this, she had tours in Europe, America and Australia. Her interpretation of a repertoire consisting of over 800 songs had earned her a top place in the Macedonian folk music with widest repertoire and consequently popular Macedonian singer. But, starting from the middle of the 1980-is Vaska turned exclusively toward interpreting Macedonian patriotic songs which directly reflected and even preempted the wish of the public opinion for independent Macedonia.
As one of the “legends” of the Macedonian folk song, Vaska Ilieva has for a half of century transferred her songs with feeling and incorporated them in the hearts of all of the Macedonians throughout the world. All of her dreams and all of her urges have turned her toward the song and only the song in a way that was sung only by the members of her family – traditional, historically correct and poetic. Her “golden” voice, which cannot be forgotten most directly, spiritually and emotionally imprints in us parts of our past, the hard life and the eternal hunger for freedom and liberty.
Her first “official” employment was in the “Tanec” orchestra, with which she traveled on tours through Macedonia and former Yugoslavia. The first tour abroad was organized - of all places – in Greece and in the far away 1952. In Athens Vaska sung Macedonian songs even then and also had a chance to hear her voice on the radio for the first time. Unfortunately, in Thesaloniki the orchestra was forbidden to perform, although a large number of Macedonians from the Aegean Macedonia (members of the ethnic Macedonian minority living in northern Greece) eagerly and impatiently waited for the performance.
One of her last performances was in the village of Mala Prespa in Albania (where also members of Macedonian ethnicity live). She experienced a large welcome and she could also see a great joy from the faces of the Macedonian audience.
Vaska Ilieva has 150 songs for which she has written the text and the music. It should also be stated that she was tireless researcher of folk lyrics to whom she added the music.
