notes
Leslie van Berkum has one of the clearest and expressive voices we have heard. She has finally produced her first CD with a variety of genres, from folk, rock, and Celtic cuts, to blues and show tunes. It includes a lovely and unusual arrangement of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns", featuring the guitar rather than the traditional keyboard.
Leslie has performed music all her life, and has been often encouraged by her fans to make a recording. She has a lovely voice that resembles Judy Collins or Loreena McKennitt with a touch of Sarah McLachlan. This is a compilation of some of her favorite songs, which she arranged with the talented Deerfield Band and Kent Allyn, an amazing one man band on a couple of the tunes. The music is eclectic, spanning generations and musical styles; it shows off well the versatility of the singer. It includes some wonderful mandolin, both acoustic and electric keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, and a sultry appearance from a 1931 national steel guitar on "Women be Wise".
This self-titled CD is easy to listen to, with beautiful harmonies and breathtaking vibrato. The arrangements are clear and uncluttered, not overproduced. This recording will be a favorite; those who have purchased it say they listen to it over and over. This is a perfect CD to provide background music for a casual gathering or a waiting area.

Diamond in the rough.
author: Levushka VyacheslavA cover is a thing that is quite difficult, the recreate of the emotion that an artist had initially put into their work. Leslie, from naught but a small town in the woods of New Hampshire, has done this with a rare-found pizazz parallelling the discovery of a four leaf clover among the endless vat of artists these days. I say without hesitation that anyone with an appreciation of gently flowing vocals and trickling acoustic fingerpicking, must try Leslie's album.
This awesome CD has permanent residence in our CD player!
author: Laurie WarrenThis excellent and varied CD has something for everyone. Leslie's clear, beautiful voice have been well-matched with other talents to make this CD hard to stop listenting to. I love the upbeat, toe-tapping "Chelsea Morning" and "Carolina Rua", and "Women be Wise" is a great show-tune that gets lots of extra play time in our house. The ballads show off the artists's gorgeous vibrato. This is one of those rare CDs where we like ALL the songs. A real find!
