notes

"Rose's pure, sweet voice should please fans of Annie Haslam, Maddy Prior, or Sandy Denny. An auspicious debut. "
Larry Nai, Progression: The Quarterly Journal of Progressive Music, Fall 2002

"...it's wonderful to hear the contrast of those guitars against the lightness of her voice and the harp and fiddle."
Judith Gennett, KPSU, Portland, OR

"With innovative arrangements of traditional material, Valerie's new CD, Petals of Stone, is bursting with passion and fire."
Lief Sorbye of Tempest

"I liked it! I'm struck by the 21st Century dark-pop rendering of familiar anglo-celt folk songs."
Kevin Vance, KALW Radio, San Francisco/KPFA, Berkeley

"Love the voice...reminiscent of Jacqui McShee."
Len Holton, From Albion And Beyond, KUAR,
Little Rock, AK

Valerie Rose makes her home in San Mateo, California. Her latest release, Petals of Stone, successfully mixes Irish and English traditional ballads with hard-rock instrumentation, showcasing Rose's full-throated soprano and center-stage violin work. "I've been inspired by the way that groups such as Pentangle, Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span have explored new dimensions in traditional music," says Rose. "In a similar vein, Petals of Stone borrows from traditional folk but is not bound by it. This is a collection of contrasts, both lyrically and musically."

Valerie Rose is a fresh, exciting performer who needs to get the heck back in the studio and give us more. In the meantime, give Petals of Stone a try, and you'll be eagerly awaiting her next album, too. … a potent musical package!

  • Valerie has the voice of an angel
author: George Maida, The Electric Croude, WCVE 88.9 FM, Richmond, VA

"Valerie has the voice of an angel and clearly one who is not afraid of electricity. That makes her more rare than a vintage Tele. I'm about halfway through cutting the show this week. Certainly glad I have room for this!" –
