notes
This newly recorded session features Denver's legendary Tenor Saxophonist Phil Urso coupled with LA's hottest jazz trumpeter Carl Saunders. Backed by an exciting Denver based rhythm section (Paul Romaine, Colin Gieg, and Keith Waters) the group plays tunes associated with the great trumpet player Chet Baker.
"Phil Urso is a magical name from jazz history, one who made his mark on jazz in the 1950s, settled far outside of New York and has continued playing up to the present day away from the spotlight. His tone on tenor was harder than one normally associates with West Coast jazz (closer to Hank Mobley than to Bob Cooper) and his driving playing helped Baker to evolve from cool jazz to hard bop. A skilled songwriter (his "Halema" is particularly memorable) and arranger, he was a stabilizing force in Chet Baker's career during 1955-57". I can speak for the many bebop and Chet Baker fans when I say "Welcome back Phil Urso!"

Excellent "tribute" to Chet Baker
author: Anders FDo not be put off by the fact that neither of the two main artists are that well known. Like the rhythm section, the playing holds up very well. The arrangements help to make this much more than a blowing session. I can see the commercial value to calling the album a tribute to Chet Baker, but musically both Phil Urso and Carl Saunders stand on their own feet in what is an excellent jazz CD.

LA's hottest jazz trumpeter, Carl Saunders, paired with Denver's legendary tenor saxophonist, Phil Urso, and a crisp, driving, Denver-based rhythm section presents a classy and cunning album of tunes associated with Chet Baker. From swinging and kinetic bebop to laid back and pondering tunes, the album shines from top to bottom with immaculate technique, noticeably lyrical phrasing and flawless group sound; even while featuring Carl and Phil. the group plays as one unit with one sound, one feeling.
I love it, played it 3 times already.
author: ArtI love it, played it 3 times already in the first week. I saw Phil Urso with Chet Baker in Detroit in the middle 1950's and he sounds as good today as he did then. It's an excellent CD. I admire their musicianship and the way they both have stayed true to jazz. Highly recommend this CD and thank CD Baby deeply for having such good taste as to carry this classic.
