UGC's sound is mix of many tastes- by Molly Snyder Edler
Upside Groove Coalition bassist, Steve Tycz, describes his band's music as "modern rock flavored with funk, jazz and soul," but after listening to their demo CD, it seems samba and New Orleans-style blues are undeniable influences as well... We threw a mix of Milwaukee musicians with varying influences, and musical and personal backgrounds into a room with their instruments, locked the door, and got Upside Groove Coalition. UGC mixes the best elements of funk, rock, jazz, blues, latin, ska, and R&B, and turns them into fresh, dynamic, infectious, rump- shakin' music.
Upside Groove Coalition's core includes former members of midwestern musical draws True Heart Susie, Sweet Polly, the Crowning, and the Rusty Halos. Traces of these groups can be heard in UGC's current sound, distilled into a distinctly new vision. Hook laden songs, clever compelling lyrics, musical prowess, and pumping live energy that these groups were known for, are here.
The Coalition started with bassist Steve Tycz and drummer Brian Bruendl looking to channel rock energy into the funk, soul, and urban music styles that influenced & inspired them. Saxophonist Matt Ostlund brought musical knowledge from years of performance with jazz, merengue, rock, and salsa groups around Milwaukee and Chicago. Vocalist Ritchie Howell rocks the crowd with his soulful energy, and focuses the groove created by the musicians on stage. Sean Berry took over on guitar in 2002 adding his own brand of jazz funk fusion to the UGC musical universe.
