notes

Transcendence is a 5-member alternative/modern rock band originally out of the local Miami underground rock scene. They have a very original sound called planet music that comes from their fusion of various musical styles and a very eclectic and intelligent songwriting by singer/songwriter Ed Hale who had long been a fixture on the scene, first playing with jangly-pop outift Broken Spectacles in the early nineties.

The stunning charm of Rise and Shine, the band's debut on TMG Records, is its ability to sound hauntingly familiar and yet futuristic at the same time. There are many fantastic tracks on this album including Better luck next time, Do you know who you are, and Tres cool, Paris; in the title track, Rise and Shine, one can hear Hale sing in no less than four different languages while the band weaves a multitude of musical styles together to create an absolutely brilliant collage of sound and certainly the centerpiece of the album.

It is hard to classify this CD as a "debut" due to the fact that Hale had already been recording for ten years prior to its release. More of a supergroup endeavour that still captivates after the band has released another two equally great CDs. But there is something to Rise and Shine that most agree is very special.

The 12 songs proper on the album are well crafted, have great hooks, and great arrangements. Not a weak track to the bunch. Rise and Shine is a concept album that combines world-beat rhythms with catchy modern-rock guitar, bowiesque vocals, an extraordinary palette of experimental sounds, and the production is flawless.

  • Transcending new heights !
author: Laura T Lynch of Kweevak.com

Ed is a prolific writer and The Transcendence are strong musicians able to play a diversity of styles such as funk, hip-hop and electronica. Their music is a blend of many genres but can best be classified as modern alternative rock. Rise and Shine is a mix of progressive rock, world music and experimental sounds. Their songs are skillfully constructed with catchy hooks and flawless production. I found tracks one through three to be intriguing with vocals and music reminiscent of early David Bowie. ‘Mother’ has biting, bitter lyrics, edgy instrumentation and expressive vocals. Rise and Shine is aptly named as Ed Hale and Transcendence shine brightly track after track on this eclectic mix of music.

  • one word comes to mind, variety
    author: Gabe Bowling - Bluntreview.com

When listening to the latest release, Rise and Shine, from Ed Hale and Transcendence one word comes to mind, variety. From song to song you may find yourself wondering if your listening to the album of a single band or a compilation CD thrown together on one of those artist thieving MP3 sites run by a 13 year old. There's the angry anti-government rantings of The Journey (A call to Arms) to their salsa style love cry on Ma Petit Naomi, Ed Hale and Company cant seem to make up their minds as to which genre they would like to commit to and it honestly makes for a relatively exiting, yet sometimes confusing, listening experience. Driven by percussionist Ricardo Mazzi, Vocalist Ed Hale, bassist Stro, guitarist Duane Allen, and keyboardist Jon Rose, Transcendence seems to effortlessly bounce from genre to genre wearing each one pretty well. Typical? No. Refreshing? Yes. It was nice to hear a band that seems to be fueled by the influences of each member as apposed to the all too typical, uniform, song after song drudgery that has sadly become the majority of our music industry. The tracks were everything from fun, to down right exotic, but if nothing else, unique and all-encomposing. Good News... There's something for everyone on this one, so you'll probably find something you like. Only Hangup... Hard to categorize.

The best thing I’ve heard since seeing Jeff Buckley in New York in 1993. The music is timeless. It’s prophetic. it is the future of modern rock.

Creative inspiration. The music stirs me. It heals my heart and soul. It promotes freedom. I feel a sense of newness, aliveness, creative birth. Me, dawning with the excitement of living. I can relate to the amazing life journey and the creative story told in the Rise and Shine CD. I'm so glad this cd was made. It tells me that I can make it too. They are so extremely talented. I can't stop playing the Rise and Shine CD (love the mix and arrangments). Wow! Hip! The music rocks and cracks my eggshell even more. Ed Hale is a muse.
