notes

"SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA...In my opinion is probably not a complete enough title for this CD. How about adding ...AND EVERYWHERE ELSE! When I was asked by the guys to do the liner notes, I'll have to admit, I thought it might be a bit difficult reviewing 19 tracks of guitar surf music, but The Torquays really pulled this one off by expanding the horizons of surf music boundaries.... These tunes are well written, tastefully recorded and produced... Hats off to the performance of The Torquays! Play it...and you'll wind up listening to it again and again. And I believe it very well may take you on a musical adventure to...SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA...AND EVERYWHERE ELSE!"

George Tomsco - The Fireballs (USA)

"The term 'Endless Summer' has become synonymous with surfing and 'hanging out' at the beach. The Torquays sound is at once graceful, powerful and haunting. Like the surfers who make wave riding the largest of waves look effortless, The Torquays have found a similarly magic way of riding sonic waves."

Robert Kinsler - Orange County Register (USA)

"Sometimes I despair that the art of creating 60's style surf instrumentals is dead...and then along come The Torquays...they have the polish of 'The Challengers' and a range of smooth guitar sounds to match, plus flair, an affinity for more echo and an injection of reverb to add excitement."

Alan Taylor - Pipeline Magazine (UK)

"Modern bands playing surf instrumental music are generally grouped into two categories, those who take a purely traditional approach to the music and those who don't. In the latter category, few bands can come close to The Torquays. Their latest CD, 'Somewhere in California' is, hands down, one of the top 5 best CD's from a surf instrumental band this year. If you're a fan of surf instrumental music, you'll want to find a copy of this."

John Blair (Jon and the Nightriders) - Discoveries Magazine (USA)

"The Torquays strap on and plug into vintage gear and deliver a set of frothy instrumentals that sound like they were all cut in 1962...There is a real unpretentiousness and straightforwardness about the group's playing...a refreshing edge...They're playing this music this way because they are into it and have the genre fully mastered, right down to the last kick of the reverb tank."

Cub Coda - Discoveries Magazine (USA)

"Taking their name from an old Fireballs tune, these four wintry dudes in matching red blazers play intensely traditional surf instros with a serious reverential bent. This is an unexpected gem that like it's right out of 1963...These guys play with such excellent precision, it's pure rapture...At the end of the day, The Torquays represent the upper echelon of the contemporary traditional instro set, ripping through with extremely skilled playing ability, great recording technique and a visible love for surf that shines through every track."

Eric Eidelbach - Rooted Magazine (USA)

"Non-Wussy Surf Sound...The Torquays stay true to their tunes...What sets The Torquays apart is their adherence to a strictly vintage approach...They are mainstays of a scene that never really went away."

Buddy Seigal - OC Weekly (USA)

"Oh man, I just got this thing...and it's awesome! If you like traditional surf, this CD is a 'must have'... Production is traditional, but very clear and lively... No doubt The Torquays will be playing their usual twelve shows a week during the summer season, so take my advice, go see them live...and for god's sake, GET THEIR NEW CD!!!

Mike Palm - Agent Orange, The Deoras (USA)

"I worked with these guys before, in my opinion this CD is a good one."

Nokie Edwards - The Ventures (USA)

If you like instrumental does not get much better. Great sounding cd. If you like them then other great bands, nebulas, hypnotic IV, ralph rebel, langhorns, planet seven, splashback, apemen, bambi molestors, Dr. Frankenstein,GT Stringer space out, Human Tornados, King of Hawaii, Surf Coasters, cadillac hitmen (1 cd), and voodoo court are very good instrumental bands.

  • What a great album! When can we expect the next one?

Growing up on the southern California beaches in the sixties was the best! And so was the music. This album is one which is destined to become a staple in every surf-rock music collection. The Torquay's are really right on with the quality sound they display in each song.
