notes

Well on his way to becoming one of Alternative Hip-Hop's MVP's, Tori Fixx packs plenty of rhythmic jams, sexual exploration and lyrical introspection onto his latest CD (the first of three). Whether controlling every aspect of the party from bartenders to the DJ to the crowd on the dance floor ("Black.Out", "We Goin' In") or steaming up the proceedings ("Pornography", "Talk 2 Me"), T. Fixx continues to color outside the lines.

Leave it to him to pen an ode to male sexual liberation on the clever, tongue-in-cheek "And Daddy Makes 3" and "Elevator" ("Pitcher. Catcher. I do em' well with pride.") Tori's thought provoking, emotional and activist lyricism are top notch and best displayed on the eccentric, equal rights pleading "Try" and "Human Being", the heartbreaking "Rebound" and the bossa nova flavored, got-you-all-in-check anthem "Still Make Em' Dance".

It's been three years since Tori Fixx had a full legnth release and this CD picks up where Tori's Mochasutra left off. Geared towards the club heads, however, this time around Tori is a much more mature, spiritual, socially concious and sexier than ever. Not to mention that his overall production, performance and his Porno-Funk sound have grown immensely. With this being the first CD of a musical trilogy (all slated for release this year), the man many call "the world's best kept secret", closes the album leaving listeners wondering, "What's coming next?"

  • Fixxated on Tori

Can't stop listening to Fa-Que, Dirty White Boi rocks, And Daddy Makes Three is so hot . . . what an awesome album! Thanks Tori, I will expect to hear Black.out the song in the clubs soon!

  • author: Josh Tager – Planet Out Music

Black.Out is his best release to date. His skill as a DJ and songwriter, improved year by year, is in full force here. With vivid melodies and hooks, Fixx lends his mastery of mixing and ear for beats to each of these tracks, making for some great club songs with outstanding beats and melodies. "Reciprocity" is an impressive and easy-to-remember track with a beat and melody that stick to the mind like glue. Fixx starts on the phone demanding that a boyfriend come over for one of those dreaded talks that's necessary when a relationship has gone bad. "How can we be a couple when U ain't even a friend/ U say U care about my feelings when U don't see what I see/ If U want me 2 stick around I need some reciprocity." Even though the lyrics are a window onto a conflict (it's almost like one of those couples that battle it out on a sidewalk, seemingly oblivious to the passersby), the beats are so catchy it doesn't matter. If only all arguments had such hooks. The popular club song "Fa-Que" (say it out loud a couple times) is a fine demonstration of Fixx's sharp tongue. "I'm sick and tired of these dudes and they bullshit/ And if y'all feelin' me, sing along to the music," he raps before a chorus with lots of "fa ques." This is a solid, pounding hip-hop number perfect for anyone who's ever felt slighted by love.

  • He's got the goods to back up his ambition.
author: Mark Davis – The Advocate

Minneapolis-based hip-hop artist Tori Fixx likes to think big, and he's got the goods to back up his ambition. Black.out is the first disc in a trilogy. The 16 tracks here offer funky jams, steamy beats, sexy humor, and sly nods to styles ranging from Harlem jazz to do-it-yourself Prince.

  • This disc does what hip-hop should do.
author: Matthew Breen – Out Magazine

The rapper who was once Prince’s personal DJ is now a producer and emcee in his own right, and he’s got the verbal skills to outclass most of his peers. Our reviewer said this disc “does what gay hip-hop should do: make it bump like the nastiest, funkiest club you’ve ever been to.”

  • DIRTY WHITE BOI!

    author: Dwayne

The latest CD by Tori Fixx gets better after each listen. I love the beats and his lyrical growth & charm with this project. I would've given it 5 starts if it included more text or a photo. Bottom line, it's still worth every penny.

  • Funky Hot Flowing Beats
    author: Atlantamack

Tori Fixx caught us all again. These tracks are funky and flow throughout. The lyrics are smooth and perfect for the beats he teamed them with. Tori Just keeps getting hotter with each new release.....wheres cd# 2 I can' wait to see where he takes us this time.

I believe this CD will do very well on CDBaby, hope major labels check it out.

  • "Elevator" hits top floor with this cd!!!!
    author: marcusfl

From beginning to end this CD is the BOMB!!!! There are not to many artist that can be very original and brilliant at the same time. Tori does both, especially with "Cabaret" and "Blackout". He had me turning off lights and dancing around with that one. Much RESPECT to Tori Fixx and I can't wait for him to drop the next two albums

  • BLACK the eff up-he's OUT and proud!
    author: Blue

Listening to Tori's "Black.Out" album, it's clear of the musical and personal growth since it's predecessor, "Mochasutra." Tori gets the party started with "Black.out," and keeps the mood elevated with "Goin' In". Each track slams the party into overdrive, but still offers tracks with personal meaning of creative emotional introspect. "Dirty White Boy," and "Fa-Que" are a testimonial straight from a b-boy's diary, while "Pornography" is a sexy, relaxing and melodic journey into the incredible mind of Mr. Fixx.

  • Loved it
    author: Mike L.

I was blown away by this CD. There are some very creative ideas happening here. I have a new favorite artist!

  • THIS CD IS AMAZING!!!!!
    author: Jarrod

Tori Fixx is a GENIUS! He Produced, wrote and perfectly performed each song on this masterpiece. This is a CD you can listen to in its entirety without skipping one song! There is something for everyones tastes, political, hardcore, dance and introspective. There are very few artists that can be so diverse yet never disappoint you lyrically also! After listening to his other great productions, Johnny Dangerous and Gary Hodges, some would wonder if Tori could pull it off himself, Black.out (disc 1) will definately put all doubts to rest!

  • Get your Fixx!!
    author: M.A.T.T.

On his fourth solo album, Tori does not disappoint, and gives us his strongest album yet . This one's tailored for the club heads, sending the freaks to the floor with infectious house and two-step influenced jams, as well as a few introspective joints. My favorites are the angsty hip hop ditty "Fa Que", which - IMO - is the hit of the bunch, closely followed by "Dirty White Boi" for its directness and raw lust. The first in a trilogy - if this is volume one, I can only imagine what 2004 will bring us with the next two! Highly recommended.

  • INNOVATIVE HIP-HOP-THIS IS WHAT WE NEED MORE OF
author: Joshua Free (aka J. Beatz)

This kid is seriously talented, not to mention incredibly polific. He's not afraid to step outside of the box and just be himself and speak his mind. On every song the production is solid and banging and the beats will hit hard on any dance floor. His intense, barrier-breaking and sometimes political lyrics are like a breath of fresh air to rap music. Combine his hot beats and smooth yet edgy vocal delivery and you've got a CD that's a 'must-have' for anyone seeking something outside the norm in the realm of contemporary hip-hop, where every thing is starting to sound way too similar.

  • Sexy and straight to the point!
    author: Tracy

Tori put his foot in this cd. Black.out is a great example of the wonderful range Tori has both as an artist and as a producer. The hot beats and even hotter lyrics makes this cd a must have in the car!
