THE TONES... Classic acapella DOO-WOP, Motown, and other cool vocal music!
The Persuasions' "Sweet Joe Russell," who introduced the Tones to his fans, said simply, "These guys are great." Nationally-syndicated oldies DJ Jivin' Johnny Etheredge ("The Son of Saturday Gold") put it this way, "The combination of The Tones' beautiful harmony and dynamic, sometimes hilarious stage presence is just impossible to resist. Audiences love them.'
We've shared the stage with Chuck Berry, Robert Cray, and The Persuasions. We've entertained from the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego ('Some Like it Hot') to the top of the WTC in NYC.... Back in the day.
These days, we get together for shows once or twice a year on the West Coast. We're older but no wiser.
Our most recent CD - Doo Wop Til' Ya Drop! - features all our best studio and live recordings, digitally remastered. Sounds like front row seats at a TONES show.... our fans know what that means....
"Well Imagine standing on a street corner in Brooklyn in 1961 listening to the sounds of teenagers singing in perfect harmony. Well that's what you get with The Tones. Pure Acapella. Their unique style and harmony is second to none. After listening to their debut album "Doo Wop Till Ya Drop" I enjoyed it from start to finish, and I reckon that any Doo Wop collector should go out there and hunt down this unforgettable gem."
Mike Cookson - The Nifty 50's Album Reviews - 3/05
THE HYPE:
What makes a band stick with you? The way they sound in recording and performance is obviously crucial. But if you look back on your favorite concert experiences, you'll realize that a band's interaction with audiences - its stage presence - makes the big difference in the way you remember shows, if you remember them at all.
The TONES are loaded with talent (see their bios below), but what sets them apart from most other acts is their stage presence--their ability to truly and literally connect with crowds. From their doo-wop sing-alongs to their improvised comedic interludes; from their kick-butt acapella rock numbers to their hands-on relationship with audiences; evenings with THE TONES are memorable, musical, and--above all--fun.
When you see them, be sure to ask about The Curse.
WHAT WE'RE DOING THESE DAYS AND WHERE WE CAME FROM:
Dr. PAUL FRIEDLANDER, also known as Pablotone, is Director of California State University (Chico's) Music Industry Program and author of Rock and Roll: A Social History. Back in the day, he sang with Pete Seeger's Children's Chorus at Carnegie Hall, played bluegrass banjo at southern music festivals, hit notes with New York doo wop homeboys The Chapters, played folk music in Moscow's Gorki Park, and rocked & rolled across the U.S.A.
BILL CHILLA (a.k.a. Wild Bill) took up guitar and singing at an early age. He studied voice at the University of Oregon, performed at the (Eugene) Hult Center in productions of Peter Pan and Fiddler on the Roof, while performing in Eugene as a single and with various infamous bands. In 1979, he found his doo wop destiny, joining The Fabulous Whitetones (forebears of The Tones). He continues to perform in and around Portland, Oregon.
LYNDA DUFFY (a.k.a. Our Choice for the Voice). If there is such a thing as vocal aerobics, Lynda is the master. Combining years of training for stage, TV & radio with all flavors of live performance experience, Lynda brings exceptional power, grace, and style to the stage. She sings doo wop, jazz, blues, R&B, gospel, rock & roll, country and new age in a smooth, strong, gutsy voice. Music is an ongoing art form in her life.
LEA JONES (a.k.a. Leroy Jones) is bass-man and occasional lead vocalist for The Tones. He has won awards as a singer/songwriter and has performed all over the country, showcasing at The Kennedy Center, Bumbershoot, and The Bluebird Café. These days he directs-and performs with-The Swing States Road Show, an ensemble recently featured on NPR. He was a TOP 10 finalist at the Mountain Stage New Song Festival in August 2004.
OUR FABLED HISTORY:
Lynda sizzled through an acapella rendition of 'Stand By Me' as Paul, Bill, and Lea watched from a long couch across the room, fighting their collective urge to..... sing along and, thus, in a cozy living room in Eugene, Oregon, The Tones were born.
The Tones (descendants of The Fabulous Whitetones) performed their unique acapella blend of 50's doo-wop and 60's & 70's Motown & rock through the late 80's in Eugene and parts north, disbanding (all too soon) when Lea moved to Seattle and Paul soon thereafter headed south to Chico, California. Bill came to call McMinnville, Oregon, home while Lynda maintained her Eugene residence. The Tones resolutely reunite to perform at least once a year in and around the Willamette Valley.
The recordings you're about to enjoy were recorded during a couple of legendary 'lounge concert' appearances, at a Eugene Celebration, and at Don Ross's recording studio in Eugene. The live cuts give a good sense of how much fun The Tones' shows can be, particularly for those choosing to brave front row seating.
Now YOU'VE managed to cop a front row seat! Crank up the volume and DOO WOP 'TIL YA DROP! with The Tones.

Fresh and Fun! Will you PLEASE consider a Christmas CD???
author: Joe and Therese SeemanWe enjoy this CD very much. It's really hard to believe that there is no music on it, not that it's needed anyway. It engages you and keeps you entertained the whole time. And the snipits of conversation are great punctuations! Please consider doing a Christmas CD. We both feel that it would be fabulous!
