A smart, catchy acoustic and electric look at Sex and Drugs, Peace and Love . . . 40 Years Later

notes

Sex and drugs and peace and love aren’t what they used to be, or are they?

That’s the question Long Island Tom Griffith explores in his new CD 40 Years Later.

“The best songwriting of 2007. In these funny, poignant, sometimes angry songs, various boomer characters take stock of their lives 40 years after the Summer of Love. Griffith’s disc is like a little novel that gets better with each read.”
- Rafer Guzmán, Newsday

Tom Griffith is award-winning singer-songwriter and recovering jingle writer currently working the twelve-tone program. All through the 80s and early 90s Tom was hooked on the fiendish habit of writing award-winning, memorable songs under 30 seconds long; tunes like “It’s As Real As It Gets” and “Welcome to Millertime” for the Miller Brewing company, “I’ve Got that M&M’s Feeling,” for Mars, and “Sometimes You Need a Little” for Finesse shampoo.

And even though he won a couple of Clios and a Cannes Silver Lion, and got to write and produce jingles for artists like Michael Bolton, Marc Cohn, Ry Cooder, Fats Domino, Dave Edmunds, Allen Toussaint, Jimmy Buffett, .38 Special, Kenny Rogers, and George Benson, ultimately Tom decided to turn his attention to something more meaningful than writing about soup and beer.

“Tom Griffith is such an MVP as a producer and sideman you might forget the guy can also write a song, but the evidence is there on his long-awaited CD, 40 Years Later.”
- John Platt, Program Director, WFUV/NY

Still, old habits die hard. Making music was in his blood. He’s not proud of it, but Tom did fall off the wagon. Luckily, he didn’t get run over or dragged by reins that twisted around his ankle or anything like that. However, his CD, 40 Years Later, is the result of that indiscretion.

“I found 40 Years Later to be a very honest, funny and unflinching set of songs about aging, family, and trying to hold onto old values along the way. The production was very sharp, too. I really enjoyed it.”
- David Browne, former Entertainment Weekly music critic
Author of Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley

Tom says, “I just wanted to write about issues that were important to us baby boomers back in the sixties, but looked at from today’s perspective. With 40 Years Later I wanted to show that, whether we’re an ex-hippie who learns ‘No Love Is Free,’ a workaholic who discovers ‘Money’s Not the Answer,’ or the parents who find their love for their children is stronger than the ‘Rising Sun,’ are sure of one thing: It didn’t turn out like we thought.”

“40 Years Later, the new CD from Mom and Pop recording artist Tom Griffith, is an amazingly diverse collection of songs and styles, tied together by the theme of what has happened to the boomer generation as they hit the 21st century.”
- Henry Koretzky, Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange

Yes, the road to musical sobriety is a twisted one indeed. We’ll leave you with these words to live by: “Grant me the serenity to know a good song when I hear one, the courage to turn off bad song, and the wisdom to know that 40 Years Later is really, really good!”

“I liked it very much - it's in my iPod now. Terrific production quality. Tom's voice is very engaging and listenable. It was obviously a labor of love. I related to the songs and was moved throughout the disc.”
- Roy Rede, award-winning songwriter and record producer
(Dolly Parton, Nanci Griffith, Taylor Dane)

“Wow! Great job! Thank you for sharing such an honest, wise, funny and poignantly thoughtful journey.”
- John Brennan, lead guitarist for Poco

Forty Years Later limns the life and times of growing up and older through a collection of wonderful songs by gifted songwriter and singer Tom Griffith. It's smart and sweet and Tom's voice has a wonderful listenable quality. I love this album of songs more than I can explain.
- Steven Gaines, biographer of The Beatles, Beach Boys and Alice Cooper

  • Love This Album!

I can't get enough of this album! It's always in my CD player's rotation. I especially love, "No Love is Free" and "She Was a Strange Girl". This is one you'll want to play over and over!

  • Tom Griffith updates the 60s
    author: Mark Virgilio

What a great concept album. Tom takes us back to the 60s and updates the topics. Great production...listen to this CD with headphones. I can relate to IT TAKES A JOB...heck, I can relate to most of the songs. Good mix of rockers and quieter, introspective tunes. I think McCartney would be proud to have written WHEN I HAD YOU.

If you're up for a fearless/fearful/gracious/slapstick/heartfelt/humble/whimsical/wistful journey through the last four decades - If you've ever wondered what Neal Cassidy might have thought confronted by a rebellious son who wants to join the Marines - Or, if you've made your own journey, and wish you had better words to describe it - there's a host of wonderful music here.

  • "All That I Am" made me cry - darn you, Tom!

"All That I Am" made me cry - darn you, Tom! This album's got everything I like: a couple of slow ones to sigh for, funky rythms you wouldn't expect, and great lyrics that could only come from someone who's been there. Bravo!

  • Great collection of songs
    author: K. McGrath

Make no mistake... this album might be written from the perspective of a baby boomer, but you certainly don't need to be one in order to enjoy it-- the focus is on issues that are important to everyone. The songs are catchy and provide strong, memorable melodies and lyrics. Unlike so much of the music out there, this album is written from the heart and it shows. Definitely a worthy addition to anyone's collection.

  • Great concept album, wonderful collection of songs!
    author: Henry Koretzky

Fascinating collection of songs tied together by the theme of what has heppened to the boomer generation as we hit the 21st century. Songs about disillusioned idealists, interracial love, older unemployed workers, pacifist father vs. marine son...an amazingly diverse collection of songs and styles, including some beautiful love ballads, connected thematically by a wistfully enlightened perspective. Wraps up at the end with a gorgeous and thoughtful ballad, "All That I Am." Highly recommended!!
