The Story Behind TK Wizard's "Crystal Dreams"

A long time ago, I started to play acoustic guitar. I then progressed to electric guitars, but always kept my enthusiasm for the acoustics. My real early rock history goes back to the Space Band days in the early 1980's. (Go to cdbaby.com/spaceband.) We released one album and then went on a long hiatus which it is still in effect (we're waiting for funding to produce a second album).

Anyway, through the years I've kept busy jamming with friends and listening to different kinds of music. (Check out cdbaby.com/btexpress.) I liked the energy of dance but could never understand why there wasn't more guitars involved. So, I started to play my electric and acoustic guitars over dance progressions which I thought added an interesting element.

In 2000, I released the first TK Wizard CD called "Party At The Castle." It received good recognition for the innovative use of acoustic guitars with upbeat dance/techno instrumentals.

Now, with "Crystal Dreams", I took it a step further by using computer dance loops. The sound is very, very dance oriented. The concept behind these tracks is not only geared for the dance floor, but for listening. Most of the jams present the guitars as the main focus over the rhythms. I incorporated other sounds occasionally to mix it up a bit. Orchestrated passages might weave in and out of percussive breaks. Classical guitar is used, electric guitars, and synthesizers. All of these ideas contribute to a sound that is quite unpredictable and exciting!

The "Crystal Dreams" music was recorded in my home digital studio. I programmed all the tracks and played all the guitars and some keyboards. The CD was mastered at Basement Floor Studios by Tim Miskimon.

Also of interest, because of the dynamic nature of dance tracks, this CD clocks in at about 62 minutes and most of the songs are long. Listening to this journey is an escape to uncharted musical territories!
Happy vibes,
Terry Kempler

  • Well recorded and varied sounds

This CD is basically party music with a dance beat. The acoustic guitars are always prevalent and wonderfully played on TK Wizard recordings and this one is no exception. This is a solid CD and gets 4 stars instead of 5 because I reserve 5 for By Invitation Only. I particulary enjoy track 4 The Squier Returns. It has a great sound and even some atmospheric balalaika sounds near the end. Great stuff. Well worth acquiring. This CD keeps things interesting by changing tones and tempos throughout.

  • Real cool concept of merging guitars with techno dance!

In an era where anyone can create songs via loops and effects on their computers, TK Wizard has taken it a step further. An accomplished guitarist, he adds acoustic and electric guitars (there’s even some classical guitar on “Cosmic Countdown”) to these tracks with striking results. All the songs jump out at you and there’s never a dull moment. Awesome!
