Grammy Award-Winning Guitarist Eric Tingstad Creates Another Distinctive Sense of Place

The ancestral spirit of the American Southwest is so moving, so alive, so powerful - it transcends the here and now with an inherent sensibility as old as the land itself. Grammy Award-winning fingerstyle guitarist, Eric Tingstad is well known for his impressionistic style, and an uncanny ability to unearth the soul of musical landscapes creating a distinctive sense of place.

It's been said by more than a few, that upon hearing just five to six notes, one can categorically determine sight unseen, it is Eric Tingstad playing guitar. His inimitable style stands out in his latest musical offering titled, SOUTHWEST (Cheshire Records.)

A longstanding and highly visible steward of the land, Tingstad conceived this project eight years ago under the working title, "The Desert Project." He envisioned an earthy and evocative mood he refers to as "Native Americana Western Desert Chill music."

Building his compositions from the rhythm section up, with percussionist Tim Miller and a click track, Tingstad crafted nine ambient, acoustic cuts with an ensemble of Northwest talent. Drummer, TJ Morris worked with Tingstad's drum loops creating a Native Americana hip hop groove. Terry Lauber's pedal steel guitar outfits essential western underpinnings without turning the corner into an overt country sound. Petra Stahl contributes venerable chants and haunting vocals authenticating the echo of ancient voices.

The stable of contributing artists Tingstad credits with heartfelt thanks include bassist, Garey Shelton; native flutist, Gary Stroutsos; accordion player, Murl Allen Sanders; former Narada label mate and Grammy-nominated pianist, David Lanz; and Tingstad's musical partner, premiere English horn player and oboist, Nancy Rumbel.

Tingstad & Rumbel won music's highest honor, the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 2003 in support of "Acoustic Garden." In 1998, "American Acoustic" won Best Acoustic Album of the Year. Tingstad & Rumbel have 19 collaborative recordings to their credit including classics such as "The Gift," "Woodlands," as well as "In the Garden" which features the single, Medicine Tree. Tingstad acknowledges Medicine Tree as the most requested and popular song in their 21-year career and the inspiration for the earthy, evocative feeling in SOUTHWEST.

A classically trained guitarist in the Segovian tradition, Tingstad began his recording career in 1982 with the release of "On The Links" which met with critical acclaim in Tingstad's native Northwest. He has five solo recordings to his credit; and has been featured on 26 more recordings or compilations. By a vote of his peers, Tingstad was honored in October with the Coyote Award from Arts Northwest commemorating his leadership, visibility, and contributions to the constant change in the arena of live performance.

    I have been a fan of Eric and Nancys 'work for many years,and this new CD by Eric takes Him into some new territory,with his signature style still very much intact.As a big fan of Ambient Americana(Ry Cooder,BJ Cole,Lanterna,Harold Budd,Hammock),I thought this new CD by Eric was going to be a great blend of styles that I enjoy,..and this disc was no disappointment! Very nice work,..LOVE the Pedal Steel guitar work,...just a very enjoyable CD.

There is an exquisite beauty in that barren, sparse and elemental manifestation of life and this unique landscape, which he depicts with the gentle paintbrush of his guitar, produces a silence like no other. This renewing silence, captured in every track, settles into the bones, deeply soothing the psyche as only Mother Nature herself can. While this Grammy award-winning guitarist directs each of these tracks with his inspired and sublime performances, each song inhabits a world of its own, exploring the voices of percussion, singers, oboe and many other complementary instruments.     Southwest has all the power, impact and stillness of a huge desert sky. The music is innovative and haunting; a mix of fresh and ancient sounds, including beautiful,resonant backgrounds from vocalist Petra Stahl. The music evokes memories of standing high on a bluff above the Anasazi ruins of Northern New Mexico, at peace, wrapped in a sense of ancient spirit and place. I recommend it highly!

    My first experience with Tingstad ~ couldn't help but roll down the windows in my car, crank up the stereo and dream. I love every song of it ~ makes my blood move, calls to that part of me that only emerges when I hear music that brings to mind the desolate slopes of my unexplored past. The combo of the guitars and horns is unique in this genre, I appreciate it because it is very fine music. ~gina~

    This is a new approach in music appreciation for me...I've become an avid fan of the Tingstad and Rumbel signature in their other cd's...Southwest evokes a scenario of looking over the edge of the Grand Canyon hearing voices, sounds and music from spirits past...and being washed by the pleasant interpretive sound of a beautiful desert sunset...Truly magic!!

    Tingstad's layering of traditional Scandanavian wordless vocals (Petra Stahl), pedal steel guitar (Terry Lauber), and accordian (Murl Allen Sanders) is sweet ear candy. And to my ear, Tingstad's long-time collaborator Nancy Rumbel (English horn, oboe) has never sounded better on record -- her clarion tone cuts through the sonic density with crystal clarity. The vocals of the Swedish Stahl, a real undiscovered gem, put one in mind of the vocals of another Scandanavian, Laplander Ingor Ántte Áilu Gaup, on the Jan Garbarek recording, "I Took up the Runes," which, like Tingstad's disc, effectively evokes a "sense of place," even if the places are an ocean and continent apart.

    Eric's music is like a huge buffet with everything from appetizer to dessert with all kinds of flavors, textures and tastes. He has now added another specialty to the selection for our enjoyment. His latest CD "Southwest" is new, fresh and delightful. Using a mixture of some old musical friends and new, he has created an ensemble of tunes that warm the hearts of his audience, old and new alike. I particularly like "The Last Caballero". Even while driving it makes me want to get up and dance the two step."
