"Time For Three is the future of music."
-Simon Rattle
Founded in 1999 by three Curtis Institute of Music students intent on exploring repertoire that stretches far beyond the limits of convention, TIME FOR THREE burst onto the scene in July 2003, following a lightening-induced power failure at Philadelphia's Mann Center for the Performance Arts. Prompted by fellow orchestra members to entertain the audience while technicians attempted to restore onstage lighting, Ranaan Meyer and Zachary DePue obliged with an enthusiastically received impromptu jam session that included works as far afield from the originally scheduled Beethoven symphony as "Jerusalem's Ridge," "Ragtime Annie," and "The Orange Blossom Special."
Since this auspicious debut, the trio - made up of double bassist Ranaan Meyer and violinists Zachary DePue and Nicolas Kendall - has continued to dazzle audiences with its eclectic mix of bluegrass, Hungarian gypsy, jazz, country-western fiddling, classical, and improvisatory music.
TIME FOR THREE sets itself apart not only with its varied repertoire but also with the approach which it presents its music: "blurr(ing) genres," writes David Patrick Stearns of The Philadelphia Inquirer, ultimately "creating different dialects," according to bassist Ranaan Meyer. The trio performs its own arrangements of traditional repertoire and Mr. Meyer provides original compositions to further complement the trio's musical offerings.
To date, the group has performed over two hundred engagements in venues as diverse as its music, including their official debut as featured guest soloists with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Music Center, opening for k.d. lang at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center, performing at the Endless Mountains Arts Series Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Cerritos Center in Los Angeles, Joanne Woodward's Westport Playhouse, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Chicago's Music in the Loft, and in such distinguished venues as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the 92nd Street Y in New York, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

The "classically trained garage band" is better than ever on repeated listenings....can't get enough of them!
Nothing Like Them
author: Kim BuckThese are 3 of the most talented young men I have ever heard. I guarantee you will like these guys and their music.
Not Enough
author: Randy CohenThese guys need to put out more cd's and also tour more. The music is so enjoyable and listenable. I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said by others.
Speechless!
author: Valery Staskey-RoederI just heard "Time for Three" live for the first time...it was a transforming experience. Their "comprangement" (as they called it) of "Ecuador" left me in tears. An incredible group. Buy their CD's. Go see them in concert. Shower them with love, adoration, and flowers. I am deeply moved.
Tf34me
author: Ron BowenI caught the last 10 minutes of Time for Three performing with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra on Iowa Public Television (recorded), and I wish I had been able to see the whole thing. What an ensemble! I hope IPTV rebroadcasts it again, but until then I've got my copy of their CD and am loving it! I'm also chewing my fingernails until they record and offer their next CD... or DVD! Keep up the great work guys!
Great Music!
author: Jun ZhuVery creative and full of energy! Deeply love this CD!
Time For Three
author: Dawn BrittThe technical difficulty of the arrangements and the precision with which the artists play is astounding.
WOW!
author: Newton MalermanThese are three classically trained (Curtis) musicians, but on this disc they play almost everything but... fantastically! You never heard Bluegrass like this! Nor Gypsy music! This recording is a blast from start to finish.

I loved every note on this CD. I had been waiting for the Witcher Brothers to record their Orange Blossom Special, but to no avail. This recording has filled the void for me. Now, I'm hoping Time for Three records their Americana Suite in the near future.

Amazing artists. Sounds great on their CD, even better live.
Worth every penny.

author: Leigh ChapinA fresh look at some favorites and a few new ones to boot. this CD will be enjoyed by all, no matter what your musical taste.
Delightful listening!!
author: Marilyn Reisse LeeI heard the Time for Three version of Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 on the WGBH radio in Boston and was captivated by the wit, charm, and virtuosity of the playing. I'm so glad I ordered the CD. What a talented group of young artists!
Incredibly inventive and wonderfully talented... Time for Three will move you!
author: Lon DiffenderferWhen I first learned of Time For Three, I thought "ok, another string trio..." However, after hearing their first piece (live in Lewistown, Pennsylvania), I knew that this would be no ordinary string concert. The composition of the group is itself unusual, 2 violins and a bass violin. Visually, this leaves a listener thinking that there will surely be a "gap" with the "alto" of the viola and the "tenor" of the cello missing. Somehow - almost magically - that expected empty space is occupied. The arrangements are fresh, imaginative, stirring, soulful, and more fun than you would ever expect. And these three are tight. They breathe together. They move as one. It would surprise me if they did not finish each other's sentences. That is not to say that the members of the group are lacking individual expression. Quite the contrary - to every delectable song, each member adds his own ingredients, and then they stir them together - sometimes gently, sometimes madly - until they have created a masterpiece. When they are in your neck of the woods, be sure to go hear and see them. By all means, buy their CDs. This is music that feeds the soul.
I Got Your Album, Thanks to Performance Today
author: Ralph CabreraI really enjoyed Bach's Double Concerto, blue-grass style and the Farewell/Amazing Grace medley as well. The whole album was delightful. Any chance you can come to Pagosa Springs, Colorado to do a concert? :-)

author: J. M. Van De MotterSaw & Heard Time for Three in person with the CLEVELAND POPS , and they were tremendous! this CD and their first one are basically the same, only 2 different songs. Was disappointed in that.
Terrific in person w. Peter Nero and love their Orange Blossom Spcl.
author: Frank BickingA truly terrific CD! I heard them in person at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia w. Peter Nero and the Philly Pops backing them up. That was so impressive that I came home and looked them up and ordered their CD from CD Baby. Very pleased with the selections, the recording quality and the service. Many thanks! My downstair neighbors are a little put off by the double bass even at low volume.
Amazing in person, amazing on CD
author: AnnaThese guys came to my school and held a workshop with my orchestra. Then they performed for us. I have to say, meeting them in person just makes the music on this CD come alive. You can hear the way they're really into their music and the love they have for their instruments and performing.
Virtuosity and vim & vigor
author: JinnayahLove these guys. This album spans the beautiful, the silly, the traditional and the very new, sublime, ridiculous, all that!
If you like Mark O'Connor and cross-over music...
author: Pam S.It's amazing what these three talented musicians do with some familiar tunes.
Just like being there!

Youthful energy & exuberance, along with classical music sensibilities, will tak
author: Joe RossPlaying Time – 37:21 -- Word is traveling like wildfire about Time for Three, a trio of young musicians with two violins and upright bass. Friends of mine attending the 2004 American Harp Society conference in Philadelphia caught the trio at the Museum of Art there, and they told me to check out the ensemble. Zachary DePue, Nicolas Kendall, and Ranaan Meyer met and formed the trio while enrolled at the Curtis Institute of Music. Now with a few years of high visibility performing, recording, and touring experience under their belts, Time for Three is poised to launch their careers to an even higher level. Released in late-2002, Time for Three’s self-titled debut album demonstrates that they are lyrical players of great emotional electricity who draw their enchanting repertoire from a variety of sources from traditional old-time fiddling to bluegrass, Gypsy and classical music. Opening with a quick-paced romp through their arrangement of the fiddle tune, “Ragtime Annie,” they then show their affinity for Gypsy music with the spirited “Csardas.” Meyer’s bass and some train sound effects provide the prelude for an “Orange Blossom Special” that is full of steam. Time for Three’s medley of “Ashoken Farewell” and “Amazing Grace” displays virtuoso musicianship. A smooth, silky touch on the bow intimately conveys these favorites. “Bach Double” features DePue and Kendall, and the piece shows that they are superior instrumentalists in the classical idiom as well. Father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe’s “Jerusalem Ridge,” about an area he hunted for fox near Rosine, Ky. is given a dynamic arrangement that still preserves the Scottish and Irish sounds that Monroe wanted to reflect. Ranaan Meyer’s original, “Mohawk,” shows some fine bow work. Brahm’s “Hungarian Dance” is a tastefully-rendered 6-minute piece that transitions from solo bass to a remarkably powerful rhythmic intensity. The trio’s collaborative original, “Samuel,” closes the project on a reflective and inspirational note. Time for Three is comprised of first class musicians who have a love for an eclectic repertoire that both respects tradition and allows them to build a personalized signature sound. Their youthful energy and exuberance, along with classical music sensibilities, will take them far. While this album is certainly a showcase for their singularly impressive talents, Depue, Kendall and Meyer have a unique cohesive flair when they’re all playing together. I hope that they’ll continue to push the envelope into uncharted territory, and I look forward to their next album. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)
I adore those boys!
author: Marianne EvansCD Baby, thank you for your great service in delivering a great cd by a terrific group. Time for Three is fantastic. They are richly talented musicians as well as charismatic performers. I hope they make many more recordings.
Absolutely outstanding musicianship and arrangements.
author: Dennis MitchellI have played bass, 6-stg. accoustic guitar, mandolyn and fiddle (minimum) for 45 yrs. and and have seen no finer talent than these three young men. I thought the new group who surfaced a few years ago, Nickel Creek was outstanding, and they are certainly, but these three men are no less talented and outstanding. They were in our city, Harlingen, TX. just a couple of weeks ago and "wowed" out people.
Heard it on Performance today. Knew I had to have it.
author: Mary LouHeard it on public broadcasting Performance Today. What a great mix of classic violin and country fiddle. Knew I had to have it. Have not been disappointed. You guys are awesome. Will wait impatiently for your next cd.
I LOVE IT!
author: DeeI heard this group on the radio in an advertisement for their New Year's concert with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. I immediately looked them up on the web and commenced to listening to every song on both albums. I LOVE my CD. It is energizing, orginal, and puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it!
it is a christmas gift due to a school visit.terrefic!
author: joan piersonI am not familiar with the group. They visited a school in shelton washington and my grandaughter is 3rd grade, ytalked with them after the concert and is so taken with blue grass she is now the youngest violinist there.
from upbeat and playful to deep and soulful -- all with a lot of heart
author: Heatherthese guys love the music they make and it shows! the play on tempos - stretching and contracting, from highs to lows - they really milk each song and explore all the niches of each piece with loving playfullness to really bring new life to familiar melodies. a great CD - thanks guys!
How much fun can you have listening to these guys?
author: Allison, Chevy Chase, MD. . . MAYBE as much fun as they have playing! Every track on this CD is a surprise and a delight. These three have chops to burn. Someone forgot to tell Ranaan that the double bass is considered a lugubrious instrument. Never mind - the world is a better place for it. Looking forward to many more performances and recordings!
Top Ten
author: JeanneI don't think I can add anything to what people have said above. Lots of energy, lots of humor, and (as someone else said), no prejudices!
Classical musicians playing bluegrass on speed.
author: Brian KuehnI heard these guys play live on NPR. I IMMEDIATELY ordered the CD. I wasn't disappointed. You can't take the classical musician out of the fiddler, but somehow, classically trained violinists make the best fiddlers. I've played the CD a number of times and I've played Orange Blossom Special at least 15 times so far. I get a big grin on my face every time I listen to it. The technique is astonishingly clean and fast. I'm a classically trained fiddle player and I am just in AWE of these guys! They do an excellent gypsy style as well!
Wonderful CD
author: ClarkI heard Orange Blossom Special on the radio and thought it was fantastic. I went home and ordered the CD immediately and was not disappointed. Each song is so unique and simply wonderful.
Enthusiastic and charismatic musicians
author: NoelleHeard these guys at Ravinia this summer (2006) and I'll admit at first I was fascinated with Nick's hair, but then after listening to their sound check decided to listen to their concert. I loved it and I love this CD! Wish I would have bought a copy at Ravinia so I could have had it autographed.

quicker than liquor
author: Leelane HinesThis CD is quicker than liquor in making people happy. Guaranteed smiles. It is a happy pill you listen to instead of swallow.
Unbelievable!
author: Raymond Saxe-WindsorI saw these guys in concert and I have never seen an audience more blown away. They received two standing ovations from a Symphony crowd which is saying something. The sold 150 CDs at intermission and did a signing at the end of the performance. Amazing.
Strings that won't put you to sleep!
author: StephenThis CD is the best I've heard in a while, and that's saying something! Unlike most so-called chamber music, Time for Three has an edginess that suggests real, honest emotion. The bass gives it a roughness and anger that a cello simply couldn't. I can't help but wonder if the bass player was taking some lessons from Edgar Meyer on the side--he's THAT energetic. Buy it, buy it, BUY IT.
- author: Cathy Strauss
Accessible, without stooping; energetic, without sacrificing quality. Really looking forward to hearing you guys live!
Most excellent!!
author: Fenton SnellThis cd really displays all the talent of these guys. I saw them in concert with the Philly Pops, and they are totally amazing. The cd captures their fire and passion for playing and brings back great memories of that show from 2004. I too cannot wait for their next release.
Wow! Awesome pretty well describes this sound.
author: Fred MullinsThis is already one of my favorite CD's. A wonderful mixture of bluegrass, classical and contemporary sounds all blended into a refreshing, exciting sound. Can't wait for their next release.
Entertaining and Energizing
author: Valerie of PhiladelphiaMy first thought when I listened to the CD was that this is what fiddling sounds like! It reminds me a bit of some of Mark O'Connor's music. The two impressions that stick with me are that there is a lot of energy in each track, and that the technical competence of the musicians is obviously tremendous - they are able to be so creative and make it sound so good.
Great!
author: JaneGreat sound - really enjoy relaxing and listening to it! You can feel the energy - hoping for more from TF3!
Love It!
author: KristineThe sound is so clean, pure, and layed back! truley unique combinations of music all around great!
Great change of pace from the Curtis School cirriculum!
author: A. LangsamHeard you on WXPN or WHYY. Loved the combination of genres and the execution. Feels like the Edgar Myers/Bella Fleck/Yo Yo Ma collaborations or similar fusions.
fabulous, fabulous, fabulous ...
author: Frankie CybulskiWe also saw you play at ISSI last summer '05. Whenever we are on the computer we go to the TF3 website and let your music play in the background. We are on the waiting list for your CD because we missed you last summer ... can't wait to listen to it in the car!!
Hmm, to sum it up- Awesome!
author: Sarah OffThis cd is something everyone should have. It's nice to hear music that has no prejudices whatsoever, where different types of music are combined to make something totally new and fantastic. It's about the music and that's it. That's how it should be. It's so fun to listen to and at the same time can be very moving with songs like Samuel. Very cool.:)
We all love it!
author: Mindy MoonThis CD is so fun to listen to. It has so much energy. I teach violin and I am excited to lend it out to my students. We saw you three perform at ISSI, and it was so entertaining. The Bach is hilariouse. My little two year old boy laughs when your music is on. He really loves it. I was glad your CD case had your pictures on it. My little four year old girl who plays violin, recognized Nick (she remembered meeting him). We hope you come back next year. You really play well together, and perform well. Your music is really cool.
