Nonstop to Paris/Copyright 2003 Rolltop Records
ArtistTim Coffman
Produced by Tim Coffman
Anyone who is familiar with Brazilian music, contemporary Latin rhythms or 60's cool Jazz is in for a real treat with Nonstop to Paris, Tim Coffman's latest release on Rolltop Records. Nonstop to Paris, Coffman's follow up CD to the 2002 release of This Is Fun, could just as easily be titled, This Is Even More Fun.
Certain to be a smooth jazz favorite, this new collection of instrumental material is modern with its deep Latin rhythms, yet thoroughly intriguing with it's vintage mix of R&B, Brazilian, Rock, Big Band, and even European influences. Coffman's 30 years of music industry experience shines through as he meticulously weaves a tapestry of time tested styles from Stan Getz to Dick Dale. Coffman is well known for using vintage mics, amps, and guitars on his recordings and Nonstop to Paris, even though it sounds fresh and bright, embraces you with it's authentic vintage tones.
Every album has its favorite songs. I especially enjoyed Just Passin' Thru, Take Your Time, and If I Give My Heart. An unexpected surprise is the fun and refreshing Serenade of Love, an Italian love song filled with passion and enchantment.
Nonstop to Paris exudes a confidence, that is a compliment to the excellent group of musicians Coffman assembled. The mixture of tones and textures are pleasant and stimulating. Kudos to Anthony De Luz and Gary Santo-Petro who provide outstanding acoustic and electric guitar, also John Rekevics creative sax and Mitch Manker superb trumpet work. I have included a track-by-track snapshot of each song.
Track 1: SECRET MEDITATION. Beginning with a haunting ethereal keyboard texture and real
Brazilian drums, the strong 60's melody at first reminds you of the Beatles, until Anthony
Da Luz throws in a clever Spanish twist on guitar and makes this a delightful opening song.
Track 2: BIG CITY LIGHTS. Here is a big band horn sound from Mitch Manker and John Rekevics
Reminiscent of an old movie soundtrack or evoking the feel of early T.V. theme music.
Track 3: JUST PASSIN' THRU. My Brazilian wife and I dug this one; a funky Stevie Wonder meets South
American sax man Gato Barbieri that moves and grooves. The tone on John Rekevics sax is excellent.
Track 4: TAKE YOUR TIME. Melodic 60's pop without being annoying. Bright and cheerful, you can see
yourself walking the beach in the late afternoon or sipping tea on the veranda.
Track 5: NONSTOP TO PARIS. The title track is sophisticated enough for the French and down to earth
enough for a big band from Cuba. An extraordinary mix of musical styles, especially the surf/spy
baritone guitar, I could see Sean Connery, the Big Cahuna himself, shooting the tube in Hawaii.
Track 6: SLINKY FEET (Re-Mix). If a song has to get remixed it's seldom worth the effort, however,
not in this case. The drums were recorded with all 60's mics giving the track a very "cool jazz" vibe.
T.J. Tindall's guitar is simply great, and Mitch Manker and John Rekevics score again.
Track 7: THE GLORY OF REDEMPTION. A cool transition from Slinky Feet, this majestic song has a
decidedly orchestral feel and is the first move away from the strong Latin percussion.
Track 8: PROCESSION OF CHAMPIONS. A 60's T.V. pop theme with a saving turn at the end of the
melody line that keeps the song interesting. Mitch Manker's clean trumpet is very good.
Track 9: SERENADE OF LOVE. At first I didn't know why I liked this infectious Italian song except it's
just plain fun. The string work is moving and the mood created by the accordion is excellent.
This is no two-bit pizza but quality pasta.
Track 10: IF I GIVE MY HEART. Pure smooth jazz, great guitar tone and equally impressive sax
technique from John Rekevics a real professional, yes this one is enjoyable and a good closer.

JAZZ SOUNDTRACKS FROM ROLLTOP RECORDS SLATED FOR JULY RELEASE
Nonstop to Paris, Tim Coffman's new CD on Rolltop Records, is a follow up to the successful 2002 release of This Is Fun. Coffman's sophomore solo project is a nonstop collection of new and unique material. The soundtrack with its distinctive modern styles and vintage tones results in a fascinating blend of R&B, Brazilian, Rock, and smooth Jazz, mixed with authentic textures from the 60's cool jazz era.
With Coffman's extensive use of vintage instruments and recording equipment, he is clearly creating his own signature style. The strong Latin grooves lay the foundation for a journey that is both familiar yet refreshingly new. Songs like Big City Lights and Take Your Time re-recreate the fun mood of the 60's while remaining true to the modern maturity of contemporary smooth jazz.
In Coffman's own words, he "trusts his instincts" and evokes our memories of classic guitar riffs, TV theme hooks, surf and pop, all embedded in unforgettable melodies. He eschews gimmicks in favor of strong melodies and his thirty years of music industry experience shows. His use of vintage mics and preamps on songs like Slinky Feet, create rich tones.
In Secret Meditation, the opening track, the distinct 60's melody merges over exotic Brazilian drums struck with paddles instead of the usual sticks or hands. Just Passin' Thru epitomizes this CD's fascinating mixture of styles with John Rekevics great sax work and Tony Patler's R&B keyboard licks. Serenade of Love is a pleasant enchanting gem with Bill Haworth on accordion and Steve Ball's solo violin, and the title track, Nonstop to Paris, is equally surprising and sophisticated as Mitch Manker lights up the night with his soaring trumpet solos. Anthony Da Luz and Gary Santo-Pietro score big on guitar with Take your Time and If I Give My Heart. Not to be outdone, drummer Michael Neiland and Percussionist Walter Santos find amazing ways to lay down the grooo-ooove
The exciting mix makes Nonstop to Paris an enjoyable ride. Filled with unexpected and unusual twists the CD sets a comfortable tone for any party. For the jazz connoisseur, there is plenty of new treats to find with each listen.

BIOGRAPHY - TIM COFFMAN

(SAN DIEGO, CA) - With the release of "Nonstop to Paris", music industry mainstay Tim Coffman, continues to demonstrate his prowess in writing and producing unique music. Although Coffman is best known as a widely respected songwriter, engineer and producer, primarily in Jazz, Rock, MOR and Gospel music, Nonstop to Paris is simply a continuation of a three-decade career that has taken him from sharing the stage with music luminaries as diverse as Steppenwolf , the Dave Clark Five and Roy Clark to recording his new original compositions of "Jazz Soundtracks."
Coffman's natural progression from performer to producer began when he opened a small recording studio in San Diego in 1984 and began building a solid reputation as a music producer and engineer. Just as every producer has a trademark sound, he became known as a quality engineer who placed a higher priority on catchy hooks and tones than on electronic wizardry.
During the years that followed, Coffman produced hundreds of projects including local and national commercials, and full length CDs for Classical, Jazz, Rock, Blues, Latin, Hip Hop and Contemporary Christian artists.
Coffman also enjoyed a brief stint in the 80's as a successful concert promoter, working with Bill Silva Presents to promote many of the leading Gospel artists of the day, including Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Sandi Patti, and others.
In 1986, Coffman founded Rolltop Records as a way to promote the artists he was recording. Rolltop, named for the huge desk in which the studio mixing board was set, became the epicenter for many recording artists in San Diego.
In 1993, Coffman launched Adventures in God's Presence, a series of CDs that eventually grew to six volumes of praise and worship music. Drawing almost solely on hometown talent, the Adventures series has enjoyed national airplay on over 200 Christian worship stations. Since 1997 Coffman has also produced 6 CD's for master guitarist George Collichio of New York.
In 2002, Coffman recorded This Is Fun - a personal project of instrumental tunes he had written over a 10-year span but had never gotten around to recording. The resulting nine-track CD drew heavily on the "soundtrack" themes and styles of the 60's. This Is Fun was a labor of love for the producer/engineer, who readily admitted, "This one was just for me."
Nonstop to Paris, Coffman's 2003 follow up CD , while still using many of the instrumental tones of the 60's that were so well received on This is Fun, Coffman serves up a new concoction of smooth jazz , R & B,
60's cool jazz and electronia to produce a "vibe" that is at once familiar, yet very fresh, modern sensibilities, with vintage tones. In a recent interview, Coffman explained, "I always try to follow my musical instincts."
Thirty years or so after getting involved in music, Coffman shows no signs of slowing down. He recently returned from Hawaii where he has been recording original soundtracks for a CD of California surf and Hawaiian music that is scheduled to be released later this year.
Some things never change.
