notes
There's a fine line between being a perfectionist and being a control freak - Tim can be accused of being either one, depending upon your perspective. But, it has certainly served him well. On his debut solo release, "Wake On Up", he played all the instruments, wrote all but one of the songs, sang all of the songs including backup, and produced the CD. You name it, he did it.
"Wake On Up" demonstrates Tim's talent of incorporating different musical elements into his distinctive writing and sound. He combines elements of classic rock and pop with a modern touch and intricate harmonies. There are so many different sonic textures in the recordings, you have to listen to each song multiple times in order to hear them all. His penchant for blending styles is a result of his musical upbringing and education, both formal and inherited.
Tim was born into a musical family in Charlotte, North Carolina. His father played guitar and sang during live radio broadcasts and wrote and recorded several 78rpm records. His mother was a full time pianist for the church. Tim is the fourth child of four, and it was his brother closest in age, also a guitarist/singer, who really encouraged him. At age five, he began playing drums.
At nine he was introduced to the piano, which quickly became his instrument for writing and composing.
The music of the 60's and 70's has heavily influenced Tim's musical style due to the music his older siblings listened to. The music of the Beatles, Earth, Wind and Fire and Grand Funk Railroad were prominent in the Cashion household - along with a steady diet of country, bluegrass and gospel. With the eventual addition of pop, R & B and Jazz, Tim expanded his love of all types of music and it helped to create a broad base for his own style.
He studied piano through high school and was offered a scholarship to the University of Miami School of Music where he graduated with a Bachelor and Masters of Music degree in Studio Music and Jazz with Vocal emphasis.
Upon graduating, Tim was offered a job by Emilio Estafan replacing Jon Secada (then unknown) as lead/background vocalist, percussionist with Japanese artist TAKANAKA. Shortly thereafter, he joined Robert Palmer's European/US Tour as background vocalist. A year later, good friend and college alumni, Jon Secada, asked Tim to join him on his debut World Tour. In 1996 Tim joined Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band for their US Tour, and in 1999 he reunited with Robert Palmer for a performance on the Letterman Show and a US Tour.
Tim appeared on the MTV Icon: Aerosmith show singing backup with Shakira and Steven Tyler. In 2000, Tim joined the newly revamped Grand Funk Railroad as keyboardist and vocalist, touring with the band throughout the U.S.
"Wake On Up" is a collection of songs primarily written and recorded over the last year during breaks in the Grand Funk Railroad tour. Several of the songs are from the "Cashion Library", and Tim has re-recorded them for this release. The only song that is not original is Tim's version of the Beatles song "Help" to which he has added his own colors and interpretation. Adding to the overall sound on this release, he enlisted the talents of two of music's legendary players. Kenny Aronoff, renowned drummer and percussionist, played drums on four tracks. There is one drum fill on "Murphy" that Kenny had been wanting to use for years, and he told Tim this was the exact song on which to use it. Also on the CD is ex-KISS guitarist and current lead guitar player for Grand Funk, Bruce Kulick. Bruce laid down his guitar solo for "Murphy" directly into Tim's laptop last winter in a Michigan hotel room while on the Grand Funk tour. The addition of these two musicians rounds out Tim's signature sound and adds that extra bit of flavor.
Tim continues to expand his career as a producer, songwriter and performer. When not touring with Grand Funk Railroad, he writes and produces projects for other vocalists, musicians and bands.
