notes
When a band's debut begins with the lines, "At the lonesome Chinese lunch buffet/Some kyoto tunes in a minor key," you know you're in for some well-considered, pent-up misery. This Birmingham, Ala., folk/pop quintet runs on the fumes of Jody Nelson's hangdog vocals and is detailed by vintage organs and pedal-steel guitar. "Home Lobotomy" is positively eels-like, a sad song with the perfect amount of grim humor.
