notes

Where are they?.. Who are they?.. What are they?..

Well...let's start with the Where...Nashville, Tennessee. When you think of Nashville, you automatically think of country music and no doubt the THORNBIRDS are heavily influenced by country but they are also influenced by blues and bluegrass, by pop and rock, and by gospel and maybe a few other genre thrown in along the way.

Now let's go with who are they...the THORNBIRDS are three talented women, Pat Roden, Mony Smith and Lana Brown. Each of these ladies an excellent lead vocalist in their own right but also a superior harmony singer as well. Each of these artists has recorded albums on their own and each has performed all over the world.

Now then...what are they?.. Well, they are a group built on an idea conceived by their two producers, Lonnie Ratliff and Jim Carter. That idea is vocal performance and quality of song, the two most important aspects of their music. (We're not saying we don't like drums and guitars...we're saying that for the music of the THORNBIRDS, drums and guitars are not the focal point) The goal is not to have every song sound like a radio single. The goal is quite simply to make music that is timeless.

We would like to explain the THORNBIRDS music with two short illustrations:

Number one: Imagine long ago and far away you were listening to the radio and you heard a new song by Johnny Cash. You knew you had never heard the song before so you knew that Johnny had a new album. You go to your mother and after fifteen minutes of begging she gives you enough money to go to your local record store and buy the album. You go... you buy it... you bring it home... you play it... you love it... every song is great... it knocks you out from beginning to end...that's the THORNBIRDS!!!

Number two: You're driving across the dessert in a 1957 Chevy. You've got all the windows rolled down and the wind is as warm as an angel's breath. The stars are hanging so low in the sky it feels like you could reach your hand out and touch them. You haven't seen another car in two hours. You turn on your radio and from a distant AM radio station comes a sound that moves your heart and soul. You're not alone anymore. It's the THORNBIRDS.
