notes
Born in Senegal, West Africa, to a griot family Thione Diop is part of a long ancestral line of drummers, dancers and singers. The griot are the memory of Africa, the keepers of the culture. When Thione was age 5 his father, Mapathe Diop, a well known sabar drummer, recognized thione's talent and promise. He brought in masters of the djembe to instruct him and by age 12 Thione was leading percussion ensembles of his own and performing in Dakar. In 1998 his made his home in Seattle Washington and began teaching and performing. He has toured America, Canada and Japan. He formed his own group Yeke Yeke 6 years ago, and has performed with many other artists including Mamady Keita, Alpha Yaya Diallo and Prince Diabate. Thione's first CD was released in 2002 followed by and instructional DVD in 2003. Every year Thione takes groups to Senegal to visit his home to study drum, dance and Senegalese culture. This year his return home was also a musical journey to collaborate with some of the finest musicians in Senegal. The result is this wonderful collection of music, 'Sunu Africa', meaning 'Our Africa' in the Wolof language honoring the cultural tradition and vibrant music of the griot in West Africa.

Magnificent!
author: C.SyllaThe culture is so alive in the music. The vocals especially are very beautiful. This is an exceptional piece of work.
Marvelously fluid and exciting music - Masters at work!
author: Carl MaxThis a masterwork of drumming from an excessively talented band. Your feet will absolutely love the dancing rhythms they create, and your heart will thank Thione and his very expressive band of fabulous musicians and singers for this marvelously fluid and exciting music. The Kora player is one of the best I've ever heard this side of Africa and together with the band, he brings alive the source of West African musical heritage in huge splashes of vibrant color -I seriously urge you to own a copy pronto!
Great listening and rhythms make one need to move with its energy.

The original rap! Check it out!
author: Kira GriffithSunu Africa is slammin. Two tracks feature Tassou the original Rap from which American freestyle Rap style is rooted. Masterful drumming mixed with the beautiful melodies of the Kora and Balafon are set against both gritty and melodic griot style vocals. Both raw and refined this record it is really something to check out.
