  • Great fun; impressive intonation; introspective without getting maudlin
    author: Heidi Brigham

Wide Awake is great fun from start to finish. The group's intonation is impressive; they are in tune all the time, not an easy feat for this instrumental combination. Songs are introspective yet upbeat, and the lyrics flow without seeming forced. Most of all, these guys know music and use it well to say what they want to say.

  • Versatility and Groove!

The Sham is unique, and well composed. The five members contribute equally, with strong rhythm section and incredible vocals (ahh, the harmonies), not to mention a perfect level of horns, or should I say horn, very Cake-esque. How do they achieve perfect pitch between guitar, trombone, and voice? Incredible! I'm amazed that each song on the album was written and performed by the same band. . . Their sound ranges from skanky dub to Dead reunions, emorock to classic rock! The lyrics are subtle but incredibly political, reflecting the angst and the hope of our era. Though the album is diverse, the lyrics pull it together thematically. Overall, an excellent album, and even better in concert, I bet!

  • Great sound with an exciting mix of genres. Can't wait for the next one.

Listening to this record, I was continually excited by what came next. It was ALL unexpected and it ALL hit really hard. I got a copy when I saw them live, so I experienced the album in its entirety. Smooth transitions and such varied and well-executed styles really make this a great CD to listen to. I highly recommend it!
